Philadelphia Phillies: A Lot of Big Names Could Be on Phils’ Radar

The 2021 Philadelphia Phillies are looking more and more like a disappointment each day. However, there are some reasons to think they can turn it around.

After beating Washington in a three-game set, the Phils might have found some momentum entering their next series versus Atlanta.

The Phillies need rotation help, at least one extra outfielder that could make plays beyond the rest of this season. They’ll probably need two outfielders in the offseason.

Of course, they can never have too much talent on the bench or in the pen.

I don’t think a huge trade will be executed by the Fightin’ Phils, but they could surprise us, right?

Here’s some big names the Phillies could chase down in the near future.

Trevor Bauer

Yes, Philly will have to wait until Bauer opts out of his odd contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers, which could be this offseason.

The former Cleveland Indians ace has been stellar in LA and would lift a Phils’ rotation in need of a boost.

I doubt Bauer would want to join the Phils, but money talks and the Phils could shell out a lot of it.

Bauer has a 2.40 ERA and 103 strikeouts through 82.1 innings pitched this season.

I mean think about it. If the Phillies wait to pursue a big name for the rotation that leaves the door open even more for the Braves and even the New York Mets. The Mets could let Marcus Stroman walk in free agency.

Starling Marte

The former Pittsburgh Pirate has a .318 batting average and has been playing pretty well of late.

He would add some experience to the Phils’ outfield mix that already has Andrew McCutchen and Odubel Herrara.

Marte could split time with Herrara in center field and replace Cutch in left when he departs in free agency.

Now that Marte is in his mid-30s, he shouldn’t expect anything more than a short, bargain type of contract.

He still has some power and can smack the ball the other way. This type of player should be on the Philly radar either this season or in the offseason.

Kenley Jansen

Jansen has been a force for the Dodgers since 2012 and he can still be one for the Phillies.

Philly will have to wait for free agency, but if they can get Jansen on a semi-team friendly deal, then it’s a huge plus.

We don’t know if Archie Bradley or Jose Alvarado will return to Philly next season.

It would be amazing for the Phils if they kept Avarado and Bradley, and then signed Jansen.

Other notable names in the Phils’ bullpen include Connor Brogdon and Hector Neris, who is a free agent this offseason.

I’m not saying the Phils will avoid other well-known players like Trevor Story, or even a Justin Verlander, but I’m trying to be realistic.

It would make sense to go after players that still have tread on the tires without breaking the bank.

Jansen, Marte, and Bauer fit that mold. Of course, Bauer is younger than Marte and Jansen and he’s in his prime. It’s so odd he doesn’t sign super huge contracts, anyway that’s enough from me.
