Montreal Canadiens: Habs Don’t Have Enough to Win Stanley Cup

The NHL playoffs have started. As the first round is finally over and now we are in round two. These series that are going on in round two are all good. One of the teams that got into round two is the Montreal Canadiens. With Covid-19 the NHL decided to have an all-Canadian division. The teams with the division were the Toronto Maple Leafs, Montreal Canadians, Winnipeg Jets, Calgary Flames, Ottawa Senators, Vancouver Canucks, and the Edmonton Oilers.

The four teams that made the playoffs were Maple Leafs, Canadians, Jets, and the Oilers. The Leafs faced the Canadiens and the Jets faced the Oilers. Toronto was up three games to one over Montreal but in the end, the Canadians came back and sent the Leafs home early. The Jets swept the Oilers out of this first round. Which now has Montreal vs Winnipeg in round two.

Stanley Cup on the Horizon?

The question is, “can the Montreal Canadiens win the Stanley Cup?” The last time they won one was in 1993. That was also the last time a Canadian-based franchise won the Stanley Cup. Coming into the playoffs the Toronto Maple Leafs were the favorite to win it all. Unfortunately, Montreal eliminated them in round one.

The Canadiens came back from a 3-1 series deficit. They are a surprise but have shown they can hang and beat the best teams. Montreal played in what many considered the weakest division in the NHL. Canadiens are now up to one game to none with the Winnipeg Jets. They have a good enough team to get by the Jets. With the other six teams that are left Montreal would have their hands full. Many look at them not beating the other six teams.

Teams Still Standing

The other six teams are the Las Vegas Golden Knights, Colorado Avalanche, Boston Bruins, New York Islanders, Carolina Hurricanes, and the defending Stanley Cup champion Tampa Bay Lightning. I am looking at the teams outside of the Jets the Canadians would have trouble beating any of them. The teams that can make a run at the Lightning are playing each other with the Avalanche and Golden Knights.

The Bruins and Islanders are tied at one game apiece. The Lightning is up to two games to none over the Hurricanes. I am not sure that Montreal has the firepower to hang with any of them. I know that there have been upsets like what they did to the Maple Leafs in round one. No offense but if Canada wanted to win a cup Toronto was their best chance.

I could be wrong and if Montreal gets past the Jets and then makes it to the Cup Finals. The other six teams have too good of defenses and can score goals. I know that Carey Price is one of the best goalies in the world but it will take a lot more than just him to get Montreal another Stanley Cup. If you do not know they own the most ever with 24 they only trail the New York Yankees for most in sports. In the end, it would be great to see the Canadians win a cup but it is very hard with the teams that are left.
