New York Islanders: Ilya Sorokin Has Arrived for Isles

Ilya Sorokin has been waiting in the wings to be the starting goalie for the New York Islanders. He was going to be the backup goalie heading into this series against the Pittsburgh Penguins. However, Sorokin started Game 1 for an injured Semyon Varlamov and they won that game in overtime.

Ilya Sorokin sat on the bench for Games 2 and 3. When New York lost both of those games, head coach Barry Trotz decided to play Ilya Sorokin in Game 4 and Game 5. In Game 5, Sorokin 48 saves and New York won Game 5 over Pittsburgh in double overtime by a final score of 3-2.

The Islanders honestly had no business winning that game on Monday, but a hot goalie goes a long way in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Ilya Sorokin has playoff experience before back in the KHL in Russia and is no stranger to winning championships either here as well.

He is only 25-years-old and this is his starting crease from now on. Sorokin was the 78th overall pick (third-round selection) back in the 2014 NHL Draft by the New York Islanders.

During the regular season, his record was 13-6-3 with a .918 save percentage and a 2.17 GAA, along with three shutouts. He played in 22 games and he started in 21 of them.

In this playoff series against the Pittsburgh Penguins, Ilya Sorokin has a 3-0 record with a .951 save percentage and a 1.66 GAA. He does not have a shutout yet in these Stanley Cup Playoffs, but he is due for one.

If Ilya Sorokin started in Games 2 and 3, this series may have been over by now. The same thing could be said if Semyon Varlamov started the games that Sorokin has played in, but it would have been going the other way.

It appears as if Ilya Sorokin is in the heads of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Pittsburgh wishes that they wouldn’t face Sorokin, but here we are.

Ilya Sorokin is the heartbeat of the New York Islanders so far during the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Without him, they would be on the golf courses.

Game 6 is going to be on Wednesday night at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Uniondale, New York. Game time will be at 6:30 p.m. ET. The New York Islanders lead this series 3-2 against the Pittsburgh Penguins.

New York could eliminate Pittsburgh for the second time in three seasons thanks to goaltender Ilya Sorokin.

He has been sensational for them and he is living up to the hype. Sorokin struggled at the start of the regular season, but he is getting better as the season goes on. This is going to be the start of something special for him moving forward for the New York Islanders.

Ilya Sorokin is one of the best rookie goalies we have seen in a long time. He looks like a lot like Tampa Bay Lighting goalie Andrei Vasilevskiy. Vasilevskiy frustrated the Pittsburgh Penguins in the Eastern Conference Finals in 2016, before losing in seven games to them.
