Golf: A Look Ahead to the 2021 Valspar Championship
The Valspar Championship is the next stop on the PGA Tour. It will once again be at the Innisbrook Resort in Palm Harbor, Florida at the Copperhead Course. There is a portion of the course nicknamed the “Snake Pit” the three holes that are part of it are 16-18. Those are the final three holes on the golf course. I have got to play the Copperhead course two times. This course is a test for the pros. Just a few years ago we got to see the best in golf in Tiger Woods. That tournament was completely sold out. This year has a limited amount of patrons allowed but it close to being sold out. We will see if Paul Casey can win for the third time since he was won the last two years. He has some completion in the likes of Phil Mickelson and Dustin Johnson.
Casey also will have Justin Rose. The tournament is scheduled to start tomorrow. This tournament was not played last year due to Covid-19. His first Valspar Championship was over Tiger Woods and Patrick Reed by one stroke. Oh by the way Patrick Reed is also in the field this upcoming week. Casey would win another one-stroke victory over Jason Kokrak and Louis Oosthuizen.
In the PGA Tour history, there have been eight instances where a player has won the same PGA Tour event three times in a row. Tiger Woods owns six of them. The Copperhead course rewards players that are more accurate off of the tee. I agree that if a player leaks their drives off the fairway have trouble scoring. This golf course is similar to Harbor Town but the opposite of Torrey Pines and Bethpage Black.
Thomas and Co.
Justin Thomas is also in the field at the Valspar Championship. There are plenty of top tour pros in the field that will make for an exciting tournament. I will be attending the first round on Thursday. I am looking to see Phil Mickelson, Justin Thomas, and Dustin Johnson. The last time I was there in person I got to see Jim Furyk in person. Furyk has a very interesting swing one golf analyst said his swing was like an octopus falling out of a tree. Many of us want to know what that would look like. I think it will be cool to be able to go to a golf tournament in person. Shortly but surely we can go back to sporting events in person. Not many people like to watch or attend a golf tournament in person because they find golf boring.
Yay! Tampa Bay!
The Valspar Championship just being back this year is great for the Tampa Bay area and the PGA Tour. The field has many great pros that are all chasing Paul Casey. They will be trying to stop him from winning his third straight Valspar Championship. The Copperhead course is one of the challenging courses that the tour players play on. It makes you think and stay out of trouble or it will eat you for breakfast. I am looking to see what Phil Mickelson will do. He is a risk-taker who does not play well at Innisbrook. In the end, it would be cool to see Paul Casey become the ninth occurrence of a player winning the same tournament three times in a row.
