Detroit Tigers: Casey Mize Could Lead Tigers to 2021 Postseason

With plenty of young arms stealing the show in Major League Baseball, nobody can forget about Casey Mize of the Detroit Tigers.

The 23-year-old and former pitcher of the Erie SeaWolves has allowed just one run in 11 innings this season.

Mize was a prized prospect for Detroit and certainly has shown strong potential through his early days in the big leagues.

The Tigers could be looking at a playoff appearance this season if their young studs blossom in 2021.

Let’s take a look why Casey Mize can lead the Tigers to the playoffs.

Growing and growing

Mize can throw some heat while mixing his pitches. He held the Houston Astros to no runs in seven innings, while striking out five and giving up four hits.

The future ace has to add more starts under his belt and keep growing from new experiences.

With the future of the AL Central up in the air with the Chicago White Sox, Kansas City Royals, and Tigers full of young talent, Detroit could be in line for a division crown soon.

Offensive Support

The Tigers have gotten a jolt of offense from rookie Akil Baddoo, who has four homers and 10 ribbies.

Veteran catcher Wilson Ramos has 28 total bases and a .281 batting average for the Tigers in 2021.

Jeimer Candelario is a .293 hitter with 18 total bases.

If Mize can continue to get positive production from the Tigers offense, then more wins will go on his stat sheet.

Parity in the American League

The American League doesn’t have a top dog like the National League does.

In the Central, the White Sox are still working on some things and Minnesota isn’t a juggernaut.

The Royals and Cleveland Indians are not as good as they used to be.

Detroit has shown signs of improvement over the last two seasons and appear to be more competitive.

Casey Mize, Matthew Boyd, and Tarik Skubal are a nice group of young arms that can help the Tigers if they develop into elite or at least quality pitchers for future years.

We’ve seen that it’s crucial for teams to have good rotations in order to make it through a full season. Clearly, Detroit is building their team the right way due to its pitching staff and this roster is full of younger guys who can be key contributors.

Additional Thoughts

I’m not worried about Casey Mize and his ability to locate his pitches and power through a long season.

Mize looks like a future star in the MLB. He just needs to keep working and going deeper into games. During his growing process the Tigers will need to keep monitoring his pitch count.

The good news is if Mize can’t go deep into games consistently, the Tigers can turn to its bullpen which features some powerful arms even though they might have some high ERAs.
