Pittsburgh Steelers: Can They Take a QB In First Round?

With the 2021 NFL Draft coming up at the end of the month, the Pittsburgh Steelers need to figure out who they will take in the first round.

The Steelers need to address several areas, including the quarterback position.

Right now the black and gold have Ben Roethlisberger under center for 2021 with Mason Rudolph backing him up.

Pittsburgh is in an AFC conference that has a lot of good, young quarterbacks.

Justin Herbert, Patrick Mahomes, Lamar Jackson, and Deshaun Watson are just a few of the youngsters in the AFC.

Let’s look at why the Steelers could be taking a QB in round No. 1 of this year’s draft.

Reading Between the Lines

Over the course of this offseason, the Pittsburgh Steelers have addressed their o-line depth.

Pitt brought back B.J. Finney and signed Joe Haeg and Rashaad Coward to help give them some more stability up front.

Right now the Steelers will have Zach Banner, Chukwuma Okorafor, David DeCastro, Kevin Dotson, and Finney starting on the o-line.

But, we could see J.C. Hassenauer, Haeg, or Coward getting the starting nod at some point.

With the Steelers continuing to pick up offensive linemen, they could take a QB in the first round.

Of course, Pittsburgh might want to select a new running back since Benny Snell and Anthony McFarland don’t seem like starters quite yet.

This Is It

The 2021 season should definitely be the career finale for Ben Roethlisberger.

Toward the end of last season, Big Ben looked a bit washed up as the Steelers captured only one win during the final month and a half.

Mason Rudolph doesn’t seem like he has enough to earn the starting nod for years to come, so it’s best for the Steelers to draft a QB sooner rather than later.

If Pittsburgh can grab Justin Fields or Trey Lance, it would be wise to do so. Zach Wilson would be nice but I doubt he falls below No. 3.

There’s also been some buzz around Jamie Newman. It feels like people have forgotten about Kyle Trask, but he’s definitely worth consideration if he falls to the Steelers at No. 24.

Youngsters Rule the League

We’re past the point of signing veteran QBs. It’s time to grab one of these college quarterbacks and make a run towards a better future.

The Steelers absolutely need to draft a QB this year.

The NFL is loaded with young QBs who could lead their respective teams to a Super Bowl run in the near future.

The Steelers don’t want to get left in the dust, especially with Big Ben leaving and Rudolph hitting the open market next offseason.

There’s also the possibility that head coach Mike Tomlin and GM Kevin Colbert depart the Steelers organization next offseason. So, big changes could be coming to the Steel City.
