Denver Broncos: Mac Jones Getting Drafted to Mile High?
Mac Jones is sky rising on a lot of teams draft boards. He wasn’t even on a lot of NFL teams radars entering September when the college football season began. Jones impressed throughout the season and led the Alabama Crimson Tide to another National Championship over the Ohio State Buckeyes.
A lot of people are skeptical about drafting Mac Jones because it appears as if Tua Tagovailoa isn’t going to pan out with the Miami Dolphins. He was drafted fifth overall last year by Miami and Tagovailoa has struggled big time with them.
Some people believe that teams are going to reach for Mac Jones and that isn’t going to be good for some teams. Five quarterbacks maybe being drafted in the top 10 of the 2021 NFL Draft and it would be an all-time record here.
The Denver Broncos have the ninth overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. Will Denver select a quarterback with this selection and why will it be Mac Jones?
They are trying to move on from Drew Lock
The Denver Broncos are trying to move on from Drew Lock. He has not panned out as planned in the first two years. Lock will most likely get a third season as the starting quarterback, but bringing in competition like Mac Jones would light a fire under his rear end.
The Broncos tried trading for Matthew Stafford from the Detroit Lions, but it didn’t work out for them. Denver has to get the quarterback position right and they maybe reaching for Mac Jones. It is a quarterback league these days however.
Jones I don’t think is honestly an upgrade from Drew Lock, but if the Denver Broncos feel that way then good for them. John Elway has stepped aside from drafting duties and new general manager George Patton will now have to make those critical decisions in what he wants to do for this franchise.
Mac Jones is more of a pocket passer than a run-pass option quarterback. Drew Lock is a little bit better of a run than Mac Jones is however here as well.
Mac Jones is a Proven Winner
Drew Lock wasn’t much of a winning quarterback coming out of the University of Missouri with the Tigers a couple of years ago.
Mac Jones has won more games than lost with the University of Alabama with the Crimson Tide. He never trailed in any games during the 2020 season and that might be impossible to do in the NFL. The next level would test his patience with that.
I feel like he needs the perfect environment to thrive in. He will have good wide receivers in Jerry Jeudy, Courtland Sutton, K.J. Hamler, and DaeSean Hamilton. Noah Fant is a solid tight end for him to rely on.
Mac Jones would be the heartbeat of the Denver Broncos offense if he was drafted by them. Jones will work hard every single day in practice and watches film hard.
In 13 games with the University of Alabama last season with the Crimson Tide, he completed 311-of-402 passes for 4,500 yards passing 41 touchdowns and four interceptions. Mac Jones also rushed for 14 yards on 35 carries and one touchdown. He also caught one pass for -8 yards receiving.
At the end of the day, it is possible that Mac Jones does end up being drafted by the Denver Broncos ninth overall. However, I could see him being drafted earlier or slipping in the first-round of the 2021 NFL Draft here as well.
