San Francisco 49ers: Will Trey Lance be the Pick After Trading up to 3?
Trey Lance is one of the hot quarterback names in the 2021 NFL Draft. He is projected to be a top-five pick. Lance will be the first quarterback taken from North Dakota State in the first round of the NFL Draft since Carson Wentz was by the Philadelphia Eagles number two overall in 2016.
Trey Lance has been floated anywhere between being selected third overall to 15th overall. The San Francisco 49ers traded up on Friday from the 12th overall pick to the third overall pick with the Miami Dolphins. San Francisco wants to move off of quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo and have someone else for the longer term.
This is where Lance fits the bill. Trey Lance is an athletic mobile quarterback, who would fit perfectly in what head coach Kyle Shanahan is trying to run. Don’t buy the words in what general manager John Lynch is saying about quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo.
In reality, Garoppolo is going to get traded back to the New England Patriots and most likely reunite back with New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick and offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels before this offseason is over here. Why would San Francisco move on from quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo and draft quarterback Trey Lance with the third overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft?
A Potential Upgrade
For some strange reason, they feel like that Jimmy Garoppolo has reached his ceiling and that Trey Lance has a higher upside, despite him being raw. Lance didn’t have a full season in 2020 in the FCS due to the Coronavirus.

His last full season was in 2019 with North Dakota State. In 16 games with them, he completed 192-of-287 of his passes (66.9 completion percentage) for 2,786 passing yards 28 touchdowns, and zero interceptions. Trey Lance also rushed for 1,100 yards on 169 carries and 14 touchdowns.
He is more athletic than Jimmy Garoppolo is. Lance’s downside is that he was technically a one-year starter in college. Trey Lance could be like Lamar Jackson of the Baltimore Ravens, except for being a much better passer than him.
The San Francisco 49ers are in win now-mode. We will see if Trey Lance would actually be the answer for them or not.
He would be the heartbeat of the San Francisco 49ers. Lance could be the biggest boom or bust quarterback in the 2021 NFL Draft.
Trey Lance is also another polarizing NFL prospect in this 2021 NFL Draft. He is going to also be like Josh Allen of the Buffalo Bills coming out of Wyoming when he was first drafted back in 2018.
Kyle Shanahan Wants a Young Quarterback
Shanahan wants a young quarterback on the roster. Even though the roster is in win-now mode, the San Francisco 49ers have a particularly young roster. They draft extremely well and they have never drafted a quarterback in the first round in the John Lynch/Kyle Shanahan era.
This would be the first time they would do something like that. General manager John Lynch has to make this decision and he is in contact with head coach Kyle Shanahan very often.
Trey Lance going number three overall to the San Francisco 49ers would be an intriguing option over Justin Fields of Ohio State and Mac Jones of Alabama. Trevor Lawrence of Clemson and Zach Wilson of BYU will most likely be off the board at numbers one and two.
