New York Jets: Will Gang Green Take Zach Wilson at No. 2?
Zach Wilson had his BYU Pro Day on Friday. He is one of the most polarizing NFL Draft prospects at the quarterback position in a very long time. Wilson could possibly be the second overall pick by the New York Jets in the 2021 NFL Draft.
His name evolved into one of the top prospects at the quarterback position as the college football season progressed. People are calling him, “Morman Mahomes.” I think this is recency bias and people are crazy to think that he will actually be better than Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence.
Wilson was being looked at by the New York Jets and the San Francisco 49ers. San Francisco recently traded up to the third overall selection from the Miami Dolphins on Friday.
New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh was the San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator last season and is very close with San Francisco’s head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch. Why will the New York Jets draft quarterback Zach Wilson out of BYU with the second overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft?
Potential and Upside
Zach Wilson has more potential and upside than current New York Jets starting quarterback Sam Darnold. New York fans wouldn’t mind seeing a new face at the quarterback position next season. Darnold may have reached his ceiling despite having a horrible head coach last season in Adam Gase.
Wilson can handle the media in New York better than Sam Darnold can. Zach Wilson would provide a spark of hope and optimism in the immediate future for the Jets fan base. Some people think that Sam Darnold isn’t canned goods anymore.
The Jets organization can’t choose both of them. They can only have one or the other. New York having both in the same quarterback room would be an extremely bad idea.
Wilson would be the heartbeat of the New York Jets. He would provide a brand new day for this fanbase.

Zach Wilson played in 12 games last season for BYU. He completed 247-of-336 (73.5 completion percentage) for 3,692 passing yards 33 touchdowns and three interceptions. Wilson also rushed for 254 yards on 70 carries and 10 touchdowns. He also caught two passes for 32 yards receiving.
New Coaching Staff
Robert Saleh will be entering his first season as the new head coach of the New York Jets. Mike LaFleur will be the New York Jets offensive coordinator.
They may not want Sam Darnold as the future starting quarterback and might want to trade him away. Also, general manager Joey Douglas also did not inherit Sam Darnold. Douglass may also want Zach Wilson as the long-term answer at the starting quarterback position for the New York Jets.
They will continue to keep watching the film on Zach Wilson and see where this can potentially lead to down the road also here.
