Buffalo Sabres: Prospects Who Can Pave the Winning Way

The Buffalo Sabres are the worst team in the NHL so far this season and will most likely land the number one overall pick in the 2021 NHL Entry Draft. Buffalo sits in last place in the East Division with a 6-22-4 record with 16 points. The Sabres are going to be major sellers at the trade deadline.

Buffalo needs to acquire as much draft capital as they possibly can. They are a dysfunctional franchise. The Sabres need to hire a new head coach down the road that will provide structure and stability. Ralph Kruger was fired as the head coach recently and Don Granato took over as the interim head ciach.

The Buffalo Sabres Kevyn Adams is the current general manager. He is going to have to make a ton of decisions in whether he wants to trade players like Rasmus Ristolainen, Jack Eichel, Taylor Hall, Eric Staal, and Sam Reinhart.

Adams took over for former general manager Jason Botterill after last season ended. A couple of young players that they have drafted over the years that are currently on the roster are Rasmus Dahlin and Dylan Cozens. Who are some Buffalo’s top prospects in their farm system?

Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen

Luukkonen was the 54th overall pick (second-round selection) in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft. A lot of people thought that Linus Ullmark would be the future goalie for the Buffalo Sabres, but it turns out it hasn’t been the case.

Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen has been getting game reps down in the AHL for the past three seasons. Buffalo is so bad that he could be a potential late season call up. Luukkonen has played in eight games with the Rochester Americans so far this season in the AHL. His record is 5-2-1 with a .904 save percentage and a 3.19 GAA.

He makes a lot of big saves in timely situations. Maybe the Buffalo Sabres need a spark between the pipes with having Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen around here. He is 22 years old.

Jack Quinn

Quinn was the eighth overall pick (first-round selection) in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft. He is a right-winger with a right-handed shot. Jack Quinn has the potential to on the top two lines for the Buffalo Sabres.

He is a sniper and could be a part of a young core for Buffalo. Quinn is only 19 years old. He is currently in the AHL with the Rochester Americans.

Jack Quinn played his last three seasons with the Ottawa 67’s and was a beast with them.

He was the heartbeat of that hockey team. Quinn was one of the perennial offensive players with them.

In seven games at the AHL level with the Rochester Americans so far this season, he has scored one goal and has recorded two assists. His plus/minus is -3.

Mattias Samuelsson

Samuelsson was a second-round pick (32nd overall selection) in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft. He is by far the best defenseman prospect in the Buffalo Sabres farm system.

Mattias Samuelsson shoots left-handed. He has the potential to be a top four defenseman on the Buffalo Sabres roster. Samuelsson is currently playing in the AHL with the Rochester Americans. In 10 games with them so far this season, he has only scored one goal and recorded five assists. His plus/minus rating is even.

He is a very good two-way player and will be for the Buffalo Sabres. One day he will get into the NHL. Buffalo has a potential star player in the making. We will see when he gets to reach the Sabres. Mattias Samuelsson is only 21 years old.
