Los Angeles Lakers: Are LeBron James and Co. Done Winning Rings?

The Los Angeles Lakers have gone through some tough times with LeBron James missing games.

James hasn’t played in a game since March 20 due to an ankle sprain. Meanwhile, Anthony Davis hasn’t played since February 14 because of Achilles and calf injuries.

The Lakers have lost three of their last four games without LeBron.

Without AD, the Lakers are 8-10 and have dropped in the Western Conference standings.

Let’s look at why the Lakers could be done winning titles even if James and Davis are on the roster at the same time.

Bad Combo

With James dealing with his second significant injury since joining LA back in 2018, how much longer can the Lakers rely on him?

Yes, LeBron signed a two-year extension worth over $85 million in December. But, are the Lakers going to get a high level of production out of James during those two seasons?

Then you have Anthony Davis. He’s only 28-years-old, but he has gone through so many injuries in his career it’s maddening.

If the Lakers want to win more championships with LBJ and AD a part of their core, then those guys have to be healthy. How confident are we that they can be healthy long-term?

Future Stars?

If the Lakers want to reach the mountain top again, it would help to find their next star player.

Kyle Kuzma hasn’t shown he can be the future leader of the Lakers.

And with so many young stars signing new deals with their current teams, it’ll be harder for the Lakers to create a new core in free agency or with trades.

Talen Horton-Tucker is a nice young player, but he isn’t a star piece quite yet.

It’s hard to imagine LA winning a lot of titles in the near future with LeBron James and Anthony Davis going through injuries and not having younger pieces to start a new core.

Look Around

The NBA Finals contenders are getting stronger.

The Brooklyn Nets added Blake Griffin and LeMarcus Aldridge to a cast that already had Kevin Durant, James Harden, and Kyrie Irving.

The Milwaukee Bucks acquired P.J. Tucker to help a group that includes Giannis Antetokounmpo, Jrue Holiday, and Khris Middleton.

The Denver Nuggets gave their roster a boost when they acquired Aaron Gordon and JaVale McGee to help their title chances.

If the Lakers want to beat any of those teams in the postseason or the Finals, they’ll need the team to rise up.

Right now I’d say the Nets are the title favorites this summer. But, if LeBron and AD come back and light up the stat sheet then things could be different.

Final Thoughts

The Lakers can win more titles with LeBron and AD. They may not win more rings immediately after the LeBron era is over, since we don’t know which young players the Lakers will have.

But, right now the Lakers should stay the course and fight each night. AD and James will return and give the club a necessary shot in the arm.

Don’t count out the Lakers just yet.
