Calgary Flames: Top Prospects For a Better Future
The Calgary Flames have a very interesting decision to make in a few weeks. Calgary has to decide whether they want to be buyers or sellers at the upcoming trade deadline. The Flames in all reality, need to break up the current core they have because Calgary needs to hit the refresh button.
This will be interesting because the Calgary Flames do have a very good prospect pool, but it sometimes doesn’t translate to the mesh into the NHL level. Calgary currently has a core of Johnny Gaudreau, Sean Monahan, Sam Bennett, Milan Lucic, Matthew Tkachuk, and Mikael Backlund.
Daryl Suter is currently the head coach for the Calgary Flames. Geoff Ward was recently fired as the head coach of Calgary. The current general manager for the Calgary Flames is Brad Treliving.
The Flames are massively underachieving so far this season. They are currently in sixth place in the North Division (All Canadian Division) so far this season with a 15-15-3 record with 33 points. Who are some of their top prospects moving forward?
Pelletier maybe the best offensive prospect in the Calgary Flames farm system. He was drafted 26th overall (first-round selection) in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft. Jakob Pelletier is 20 years old and is a left-handed shot left-winger.
He is in his fourth season in the QMJHL, but this is his first season with the Val d’Or Foreurs. Jakob Pelletier played his last three seasons with team Moncton Wildcats.
He is the heartbeat of Val d’Or Foreurs. Pelletier is one of the most talented offensive players on the team.
In 24 games with them so far this season, he has scored nine goals and has recorded 25 assists. His plus/minus 19. Jakob Pelletier could potentially be replacing Johnny Gaudreau in a top six role down the line for the Calgary Flames because his future is up in the air with the team.
Pettersen was a sixth-round pick (167th overall selection) in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft. He is a left-handed shot centerman and is only 20 years old. Emilio Petterson is currently in the AHL with the Stockton Heat.
He has the potential to be a top six centerman, but he will probably be a bottom six centerman to start his NHL career with the Calgary Flames. Calgary may have a lot of prospects filling in sooner rather than later.
Emilio Pettersen played the last two seasons in collegiate hockey with the University of Denver (NCHC, NCAA). In 14 games with the Stockton Heat in the AHL so far this season, he has scored four goals and has recorded six assists. His plus/minus is -2.
Zary was drafted 24th overall (first-round selection) in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft. He is a left-handed centerman. This is one of Calgary’s prized possessions in the farm system.
Connor Zary is only 19 years old. The Calgary Flames believe he has a ton of potential. He is currently playing in the AHL with the Stockton Heat. Zary has played the last three seasons in the WHL with the Kamloops Blazers.
In nine games with the Stockton Heat in the AHL so far this season, he has scored three goals and has recorded four assists. His plus/minus is 2.
Connor Zary will be a pivotal role player for the Calgary Flames to potentially start his NHL career, but then he will make his way up the depth chart.
