Arizona Cardinals: Two Best Draft Choices at No. 16

After a collapse at the end of the 2020 NFL season, the Arizona Cardinals have spent a lot of this off-season adding leadership and culture creators. Though they have added a lot of experience, they need to look at getting better through the draft as well. Here are two options that could provide an immediate spark at the beginning of the 2021 season. This piece comes with a disclaimer however, there is exactly zero chance to know for sure if either of these guys will fall to the Cardinals, but one can hope.

Jaycee Horn, CB University of South Carolina

With the departure of Patrick Peterson to the Minnesota Vikings the Cardinals find themselves with a hole at corner back. Sure they added Malcolm Butler recently and also still have Byron Murphy that can play they need another corner. Why not go after one of the most highly touted prospects in this years NFL draft. Horn is a corner that plays the ball well, prevents separation, and is versatile enough to play in off man, zone, or press man. This works to Arizona’s favor due to Cardinals Defensive Coordinator Vance Joseph‘s obsession with throwing in multiple different types of defenses in any given drive.

Jaycee Horn is a human Swiss Army knife when it comes to coverage. Though the scouting reports have some worry about his speed he blew them all away at his pro day by putting up what ESPN labels as what would have been the “best 40 time of all corner prospects” if the NFL. Check out his highlight reel below.

2. Travis Etienne, RB, Clemson

Naturally it helps to be on this when you outright say that your dream scenario is to be an Arizona Cardinal, but the good news for Etienne is that the Cardinals may want him as well. Travis Etienne is a smart, patient runner that has breakaway speed and consistently runs north and south at dominating speed and size. In addition to that he is also able to make the tough catches with defenders draped all over him.

This is going to help when Cardinals head coach Kliff Kingsbury inevitably falls into the “dink and dunk” offense he reverts back to. Etienne broke the NCAA record for most games with a least one touchdown and he exceeded 100 touches and double digit touchdowns in every season.

He is consistent, but there’s one major reason why he may fall to 16 and that’s his ball handling. Etienne fumbled in three games last season and two the season before that he also had some games where he had some issues with blocking assignments as well. Check out this highlight reel and see what you think about him.

In Conclusion

To wrap it up I am just going to make sure and say this again, there is no chance someone can perfectly predict what teams will do on draft day past about pick four. Though both of these players have been mentioned in mock drafts as going to the Cardinals at 16 there is a chance that both could be gone. Or by some miracle General Manager Steve Keim trades the pick for proven talent.
