NHL: Here Are the Top Five Teams in the Power Rankings

We are on the verge of ending another month in the NHL. The good teams are starting to show their dominance. Others are trying to get to the playoffs and stay alive for a possible playoff spot. There have been very few changes when it comes to the top and bottom of the power rankings. And there are about one and half months left in the season. There is time for teams that are in the middle of the power rankings to get to the top. The trade deadline is coming up but it will be hard with where the salary cap to move certain free agents. Here are my five for the week from five till one.

Las Vegas Golden Knights

This week the Golden Knights have two wins over the St. Louis Blues and one versus the San Jose Sharks. This all comes after they lost by one-goal to the Minnesota Wild who is streaking. La Vegas got good news goalie Robin Lehner has returned to practice. He suffered a concussion in mid-February. This will help Marc-Andre Fleury down the stretch and into the playoffs. This team in my opinion will find a way to right the ship and continue to be one of the top teams in their conference and in the Western Conference.

Washington Capitals

Here is a team in the NHL that has been on the rise of late in the power rankings. Last week they ranked seventh. The only team that could beat the Minnesota Wild was the Washington Capitals. They have scored 19 goals while winning four straight games. Winning those four has put them in a first-place tie in the East. Oh, and by the way, Alex Ovechkin scored in the 718th goal to pass Phil Esposito for sixth all-time. This a team that will be in the thick of things when it comes to the playoffs. Look for them to be a team that many will have to go through in the East.

Carolina Hurricanes

This division that the Hurricanes are in is one of the most exciting in the NHL. With the Hurricanes, Florida Panthers, and Tampa Bay Lightning go back and forth in the number one spot and first place in the division. They started their week off with a two-game sweep of the Nashville Predators and one game one versus the Detroit Red Wings. They would lose the second game. Carolina goalie Alex Nedeljkovic has won four in a row and is 6-2-1 in nine appearances. Nedeljkovic has filled in for Petr Mrazek who suffered a thumb injury in late January.

Tampa Bay Lightning

The biggest event for the Tampa Bay Lightning was raising their 2019-20 Stanley Cup banner the rest of the way to the rafters on Amalie Arena. The Lightning was waiting for fans to be able to come back and now about 1900 can attend games. Tampa Bay has only lost six of 28 games in regulation. That has been great hockey. I have seen this team come from behind recently. This a team that barring any major injuries down the stretch could be the first team to repeat since the 2016-17 season. Nikita Kucherov is also starting to skate again which means he is close to returning which will make the Lightning stronger.

Florida Panthers

It’s funny to see that both teams that call the Sunshine State of Florida are one and two in the power ranking. Many say that Florida is not a hockey state will so far these two teams have proven them wrong. The Panthers have been a quiet team on the rise in the NHL. They have the fewest losses in regulation in the league with only five. Florida defeated the Columbus Blue Jackets and the Chicago Blackhawks twice. Right now they have 19-5-4 through 28 games which are the best in franchise history. They will be looking to win a playoff series for the first time since 1996.

I know that these power rankings can all change from week to week. I think that it is awesome that the two teams that are in the same state that I lived in all of my life are one and two. Many say that the Florida Panthers and Tampa Bay Lightning are tied for number one in the power rankings. The other three the Las Vegas Golden Knights, Washington Capitals, and Carolina Hurricanes are still solid. I think that all five of them will be in the postseason when it is all said and done. There might be one that wins Lord Stanley Cup later this year.
