Colorado Avalanche: Top Prospects Able to Build a Better Future
The Colorado Avalanche were one of the worst teams in the NHL a few seasons ago. Colorado is now knocking on the door to become one of the favorites to win the Stanley Cup title this season. The Avalanche have one of the better prospect pools in the entire NHL.
Colorado has had players come up through the rankings like Nathan MacKinnon, Mikko Rantanen, Cale Makar, Bowen Byram, and Martin Kaut. The Colorado Avalanche’s current general manager is Joe Sakic and the head coach is Jared Bednar.
Their record so far this season is 16-8-2 with 34 points. They are currently in third place in the West Division at the moment. Colorado has another chance to make another deep Stanley Cup Playoffs run this season.
However, if the Avalanche don’t go deep, who do they have in the prospect pool for the immediate future?
Newhook was the 16th overall pick (first-round selection) in the 2019 NHL Draft by the Colorado Avalanche. He is a left-handed centerman and is only 20 years old. Alex Newhook is currently in his second collegiate season with the Boston College Eagles (NCAA, H-East).
In 10 games played with Boston College so far this season, he has scored five goals and has recorded five assists. His plus/minus rating is -2.
Alex Newhook is the heartbeat of the Boston College Eagles hockey team. He is one of the most elite playmakers and goal scorers in the NCAA.
Newhook will most likely sign an entry-level contract either this year or next year. He has top six potential at the NHL level.
Barron is another rich prospect that the Colorado Avalanche have in their respective farm system when it comes to defenseman. Cale Makar and Bowen Byram have already reached that plateau. Justin Barron is next on that list for them.
He is only 19 years old and has a right-handed shot. Barron was the 25th overall pick (first-round selection) for the Colorado Avalanche in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft. He is currently in his fourth season with the Halifax Mooseheads in the QMJHL.
Justin Barron has currently played in 22 games so far this season for them. He has scored five goals and has recorded 18 assists. His plus/minus is 3. Barron has the potential to be a top four blueline pairing and also a top two power play unit on the back end.
Annunen is a 21-year old goaltender, who currently plays for Karpat in the SM-liiga league. In 19 games so far this season, his record is 7-6-6 with a .880 save percentage and a 2.39 GAA, along with one shutout.
Justus Annunen could be within the organization within the next year or so with the Colorado Avalanche. He has the potential to be really good. Hunter Miska is the current backup to Philipp Grubauer. I’m sure the Colorado Avalanche want to upgrade their backup goaltending situation down the line.
He could be a starter in the NHL, but he could be a starter for a season or two in the AHL with the San Antonio Rampage. The Colorado Avalanche will have more depth at net when he reaches either the AHL or the NHL.
