NHL: Five Buyers at the Trade Deadline
We are getting into the middle of the NHL season. That means we are seeing who the teams that are going to make the playoffs and the ones that need some help. That help may come from trades at the trade deadline. Some teams will be buyers at the deadline other will have to sell and hope that next year will be their year. The NHL is also having an extension draft next year as the Seattle Kraken will be joining the league. The defending Stanley Cup champions the Tampa Bay Lightning are in good shape. I have five teams that should be buyers at the deadline. Those teams are Toronto Maple Leafs, Winnipeg Jets, Boston Bruins, Colorado Avalanche, and St. Louis Blues. These five teams are right where they want to be but with a little help, it could push them father in a playoff run.
Toronto Maple Leafs
The Leafs lead the North division which is all Canadian do to the coronavirus. The US-based teams cannot cross the border because of fear of spread. Canada itself wants a cup since they have not hoisted one since 1993 when the Montreal Canadians won it. The Leafs have been close but have the longest Stanley Cup drought. There is a lot at stake for them because not having to play their nemesis the Boston Bruins until playoff time might be a good thing. Look for them to bolster their roster to make that run to a Stanley Cup.

The Jets find themselves in the same division as the Toronto Maple Leafs. This team has been in contention in the past. The Jets are seven points out of first place and third in their division. Winnipeg may need to go out and bolster their roster by picking up a top-four defenseman. Defense when championships along with great goaltending. The defensemen help out and if you get the right one that can also score goals that is a bonus. I believe this is the missing piece that could make a difference with the close of the regular season and in the playoffs.
The Bruins seem to always be a good team and in the playoff picture. So far age has not caught up to them. What Boston may need is secondary scoring left-shot defensemen. The Bruins at the moment are reliving on their top line to score goals. That will not be good come playoff time. The team that they go up against could shut down the line and make the Bruins scramble. If a team is not having trouble scoring it never hurts to add a defenseman. Look for Boston to do one or both to help them go far in the NHL postseason.
The Avalanche were a team that was favored to be in the Stanley Cup finals. At the present moment, they are fourth in the West division. They are a solid team and we’re in the playoffs and lost in the second round to the Dallas Stars who would go to win in the finals and be in the Stanley Cup. This is a team that just needs to add some depth to get them in better shape for a deep playoff run. This would put them back in the talks for a chance to be in the finals and win a Stanley Cup.
St. Louis Blues
The Blues are just two years removed from ending their Stanley Cup drought winning it all in 2019. This year has not been good they have been bitten by the injury bug too much. Adding some players at the deadline could help with those injuries adding depth to the roster. Just like everyone else, this would help towards the end of the season and into the playoffs. St. Louis is in second place in the NHL West division behind the Las Vegas Golden Knights. Picking up players at the deadline could help them as they are only one point out of first.
It will be exciting as the NHL season heads towards the playoffs. These five teams will probably not be the only ones making roster changes. There might be a middle-of-the-pack team that takes a chance and that chance pays off and gets them into the postseason. I think these five would benefit more from changing their roster slightly. It all comes down to the biggest prize in the NHL and that is the Stanley Cup. I am looking forward to seeing which players end up on a new roster with a chance to win it all.
