Boston Celtics: Why Kawhi Leonard Is Their Only Hope

The 2020-21 NBA season has not been very kind to the Boston Celtics. It’s to the point where people are questioning their future. Should they consider chasing Kawhi Leonard?

Boston is 16-17 after beating the Indiana Pacers on Friday.

But, the Celtics need more talent and depth at that.

I can’t imagine the C’s solving all their issues this year, but what if they got more aggressive or creative in the offseason and went after a title in 2021-22?

Kawhi Leonard is a cornerstone player and he could be a free agent this offseason. But, the former San Antonio Spur could return to the Los Angeles Clippers since he has a player option.

Kawhi could be a free agent again in 2022, but the Clips could re-sign him and go over the cap since he has Bird Rights.

Why should the Boston Celtics go after Kawhi?

All-Star Needed

The Celtics have some good players, but they need a game-changer.

Kawhi has won two NBA Finals MVPs in his career and he can change a team for the better.

The Celtics already have Jayson Tatum, Kemba Walker, and Jaylen Brown.

If Boston could add Kawhi Leonard to the roster they have, it could elevate them in the Eastern Conference.

Right now it appears as though the Philadelphia 76ers, Milwaukee Bucks, and Brooklyn Nets are the three possible championship contenders in the conference.

Help Brad

In today’s NBA, your favorite team must have multiple stars in order to win the Finals.

There are a lot of good coaches who may not win a title, because stars weren’t acquired or developed to help their teams.

The Celtics are in the same category as the Dallas Mavericks and possibly the Toronto Raptors.

All three teams have good coaches and they also want championships. They also don’t have enough star power to assist their young players.

Brad Stevens should not be fired, but the Celtics do need to give themselves a spark.

Boston may have to wait until the offseason to do so, but in the meantime they should make everyone available except for Tatum.

Not Many Big Names

Sure Steph Curry, James Harden, and Kevin Durant could be free agents in 2022.

But, the Celtics need a boost sooner rather than later.

Kawhi Leonard is the only star player the C’s can try to get before the 2021 season, at least one who can be a franchise player.

Guys like LeBron James, Nikola Jokic, and Giannis Antetokounmpo are going to be with their current teams for a while. And Luka Doncic will most likely be in Dallas for a long time also.

Can the Celtics get really creative, fix some holes, and become a title contender? It’s hard to do all three, especially when you don’t have a lot of star power to speak of.

Big Picture

The Boston Celtics need to think about the future.

If the C’s can get Kawhi Leonard that shoves them in the direction of another title. Currently, their archrivals, the Los Angeles Lakers have 17 championships (tied Boston in 2019-20).

If the Celtics can focus on improving their bench and their three-point shooting before free agency, that could entice Kawhi to join them.

Tatum and Leonard are small forwards, so if they are in Boston, they’ll need to figure out who will move to a different spot when both are on the court at the same time.

Could you imagine if the C’s stunned everybody by trading Tatum and another player to the Miami Heat in exchange for Bam Adebayo and Tyler Herro?

Regardless of what happens this season, Danny Ainge and the Boston Celtics have to think about signing Kawhi Leonard if he’s available this summer.
