Arizona Cardinals: One Move To Ignite Offense

It may seem crazy, but there is one move that the Arizona Cardinals could make this week that can change the fortunes of their 2021 season; Hire an offensive coordinator. This may seem like backward thinking considering that Kliff Kingsbury was hired for his “offensive genius”. However, it is not. This move could be the one thing that changes everything and give Cardinals fans hope for the upcoming season.

It’s clear by the last two regular-season games of the season that Kingsbury had too much on his plate. When the Cardinals go from being a serious contender to get into the postseason to missing it entirely in two games, it’s time to rethink things. This is especially true considering both of these games were against quarterbacks making either their first start that season or their first NFL start ever. The Arizona Cardinals were playing uninspired football and a lot of the blame falls on Kingsbury for that.

Could it be Kliff just ran out of time focusing on the offense? Possibly. However, another conclusion seems clearer. He’s inexperienced.

Last season was Kliff Kingsbury’s second year in the NFL. Although there was improvement last season, there was definitely more left to be desired. With Tom Clements retiring and Sean Kugler getting promoted, is it really enough to help this Cardinals offense? maybe.

The guaranteed thing that is going to help would be to bring in an offensive coordinator with some head coaching experience that can act as a go-between with offensive players and their head coach. Arizona already has Vance Joseph on defense to help provide that experienced insight, but on the offensive side, they should look to add something similar. Sean McVay and Kyle Shanahan have already made this humble move to hire offensive coordinators, it’s time for Kliff to do the same.

Who is it they should hire?

This is the question because although it seems clear, you can get someone in there like Mike McCoy who clearly could not handle the responsibility. Luckily enough there is one clear-cut candidate that would be a shoo-in for this opportunity. Former Los Angeles Chargers head coach, Anthony Lynn. In his years with the Chargers, you could see a fairly disciplined attack most of the time.

The offense was rarely the issue in Los Angeles, especially once Justin Herbert started lighting up the league. It seems to me that he would be the perfect person to pair with Kyler Murray. This potential move takes some responsibility off of Kliff and turns the Cardinals into a ten-win football team. Kliff should still be around for fourth-down decisions and game management and each will get better with someone experienced running the offense like Lynn.

Realistically, it doesn’t look like the Arizona Cardinals will be hiring an offensive coordinator this offseason as Sean Kugler was promoted to running game coordinator and Kingsbury is in sole possession of the passing game.
