Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Looking Back on a Super 2020-21 Season

It was a great year for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. This is a team that struggled to make the playoffs and have a winning record. During this past offseason, general manager Jason Licht made some changes. He had already had head coach Bruce Arians for a second year. Licht went out and got the GOAT Tom Brady to come to Tampa after his relationship with the New England Patriots had gone sour. After he got Brady shortly he was able to get Brady’s former teammate Rob Gronkowski to also come out of retirement. Brady would also recommend that the Buccaneers bring in Antonio Brown. Licht also got free agent Leonard Fournette to help Ronald Jones and the running game. The biggest issue that many thought the defensive secondary was the weak link because of their youth. Well down the stretch they prove everyone wrong.

Five Loses

Just like every team in the NFL, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers had losses. For the first time in a long time, they had more wins than losses. The Bucs’ first loss came in week one against the New Orleans Saints. This was the big matchup that all Buccaneers fans were waiting for. The Saints have won the NFC South the last few years. The final score in that game would be 34-23. The offense struggled in the game as they were trying to find their rhythm. One of their other losses would come against the Saints again. This time the game would take place at home and they got crushed 38-3 the whole team struggled that game. The second loss would come to the Chicago Bears in week five. It was a primetime game that they lost 20-19. This is a game they should have won.

Two weeks after their second loss to the New Orleans Saints they would fall to the Los Angeles Rams. This game was back and forth but the Rams just did enough to take the win in a 27-24 final score. The following week they would host the Kansas City Chiefs and have their final loss of the season. It was a bad first half for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. They almost came back losing by just three points 27-24 so that was back to back losses by three points to two teams that were headed to the playoffs.

11 Wins

After their loss on week one against the Saints, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers would have three straight wins. The first one coming in week two which was their home opener against the Carolina Panthers. The final score in that game was 31-17 it looked like this was the first game the team was getting on the same page. The Buccaneers got their first road win beating the Denver Broncos 28-10. They would return home to play the Los Angeles Chargers and beat them by seven points 38-31. One of the biggest wins in 2020 for the Buccaneers came at home against the Green Bay Packers. In this game, they dominated winning 38-10. After that win, they would get another dominating win of the road. It would come against the Las Vegas Raiders. The final score in that game was 45-20.

The next victim for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers was the New York Giants. This game was closer than many thought and they pulled out in the end winning by two points 25-23. The next win came against the Carolina Panthers sweeping the season series in a 46-23 win. Their next win came at home against the Minnesota Vikings 26-14 both teams needed this win to help them get in the playoff picture. The next game was the first against the Atlanta Falcons who showed they could score points but not hold a led. The Buccaneers would win this game 31-27. The following week they would a Saturday game against the Detroit Lions. This was another dominating win 47-7 Tampa suffocated the Lions. The last came in week 17 beating the Falcons again 44-27. They finished the season 4-2 in the NFC South.

Playoffs

How weird it is the Tampa Bay Buccaneers finished the season 11-5 and had to be the road team in the first round of the playoffs. They would head to the nation’s capital to play the Washington Football Team. In this game, many thought the Buccaneers would dominate Washington. Instead, Tyler Heinicke had the best game of his career. The Football Team kept close but the Bucs found a way to win 31-23. It was the first win since their Super Bowl win and also appearing in the playoffs ended a long playoff drought. Their next opponent was against the New Orleans Saints. A team that they struggled against during the regular season. This game was much different the Buccaneers came to play and shut down Drew Brees and got a win 30-20. That sent them to the NFC Championship game against the Green Bay Packers.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers had already beat the Packers earlier in the season. This game was different because both teams had gotten better. This game would mean a trip to Tampa for the Super Bowl. The Buccaneers got off to an early lead and the defense once again step up and were able to keep Aaron Rodgers at bay. They would come out with a 31-26 win and be the first team in NFL history to host the Super Bowl. Tampa would face the Kansas City Chiefs who were the defending Super Bowl Champions. Once again the Buccaneers were not supposed to win. This was not the best game for Tom Brady but the defense stepped up again and made Patrick Mahomes run for his life all game long. The Buccaneers would end the season with a 31-9 win and be crowned Super Bowl Champions defending their home turf.

This is the season that has been filled with awesome moments in the Tampa Bay area. The Tampa Bay Lightning won the Stanley Cup, the Tampa Bay Rowdies won their division in the USL, the Tampa Bay Rays made it to the World Series and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers won the Super Bowl. It has been awesome for the fans of those teams. The plan is that Jason Licht wants to bring everyone back to make a run at another Super Bowl in 2021. This win hit me kind of hard my mom was a big fan of the Buccaneers and she was smiling brightly when they won on Sunday night.
