NFL Draft: Is DeVonta Smith a Top 3 Pick?

DeVonta Smith is one of the most dynamic wide receivers in all of college football. He won the Heisman Trophy this season and Smith was the first wide receiver to win the Heisman Trophy since Desmond Howard in the 1990’s. Will DeVonta Smith be a Top 3 Pick?

He caught 12 passes for 215 yards and three touchdowns in the National Championship Game. Alabama won the game over Ohio State by a final score of 52-24.

DeVonta Smith injured his arm in the second-half. It was early in the third-quarter, and he did not return to the game. Smith dominated the Ohio State secondary and made Mac Jones’s life easy.

The Jacksonville Jaguars own the number one overall pick and they will most likely take quarterback Trevor Lawrence out of Clemson University.

The New York Jets own the second overall pick. There are a lot of questions in what they will do. New York could take DeVonta Smith here. Sam Darnold doesn’t have a lot of weapons on the outside. Would this make him into a better quarterback?

It would be very possible because a wide receiving core of DeVonta Smith, Denzel Mims, and Jamison Crowder would be a solid 1,2,3 punch.

The Miami Dolphins own the third overall pick. If the New York Jets don’t select DeVonta Smith, Miami would take him here. The Dolphins should not have allowed him to leave Hard Rock Stadium on Monday night. Miami Gardens, Florida, is where the National Championship Game was played.

This would be perfect because Tua Tagovailoa needs an outside weapon to throw to. Tagovailoa needs an outside wide receiver to throw too. All Miami has is DeVante Parker, Jakeem Grant, and Mack Hollins. Brian Flores‘s bunch needs to upgrade at that position.

The only reason why they have the number three pick is because of the Houston Texans trade for offensive tackle Laremy Tunsil and wide receiver Kenny Stills.

DeVonta Smith will be the heart and soul of a receiving group moving forward. He runs excellent routes, has great hands, and makes defensive backs look confused.

DeVonta Smith finished the season with 117 receptions for 1,856 yards receiving and 23 touchdowns.

He is 6’1″ and weighs 175 lbs. Smith’s game was easily translate to the NFL level. At the NFL level, he is going to be a dominant wide receiver.

Speaking of wide receivers, he had Jerry Jeudy (Denver Broncos), Henry Ruggs II (Las Vegas Raiders), and Jaylen Waddle in the same room. Alabama has become a wide receiver university. DeVonta Smith is the latest to come from it.

I think DeVonta Smith will not get past number three in the 2021 NFL Draft. There isn’t a chance he is still sitting at the number six pick by the Philadelphia Eagles. They would have to trade up in order to get him in this draft, but we will see what happens and where he lands.
