Washington Football Team: Five Keys to Sinking the Tampa Bay Buccaneers

As the 2020-21 season began, the chances of the Washington Football Team making the NFL Playoffs were low. However, given the play inside their division (NFC East) Washington had a great chance. Late in the season, Washington would go on a four-game winning streak that would propel them to where they are. They are the 2020 NFC East Division Champs and will face the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the first round of the 2020-21 NFL Playoffs. What will it take for Washington to win? Many say a lot. Thus, we look at some keys for Washington to watch for.

Pass Rush

This is going to be the biggest key for the Washington Football Team. While an outside pass rush is nice and can usually disrupt an offense, on Saturday Washington’s rush will need to be different. To disrupt Tom Brady you need to be in his face and at his feet. Do not let him set up or step up in the pocket. In saying that, Washington will need to muddle the middle of the pocket. Allowing Brady to see the field in front of him will be a killer to this defense. Jack Del Rio needs to constantly be at the feet and in the face of Brady. If he is, his defense will have success on Saturday Night.

Run Game

I do not believe all of this talk that you cannot run on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers defense. Yes, I know they are the number one run defense in the league. Nonetheless, there may be a little tarnish on that number. In a majority of those games, teams fell behind and had to change their gameplans. I am not doubting that the Bucs have a solid defense. Todd Bowles always creates winning defenses. I am just saying that Washington CANNOT stop running the football.

Passing Game

Washington is going to have a question at QB. Is Alex Smith healthy? Will Taylor Heinicke see significant action? All of these will be major factors in the way Washington attacks downfield. If Smith is any form of himself that we saw in the first half of the San Francisco game, Washington will be in for a long night. My gut feeling is that we will see some, if not a lot of Heinicke throughout this game. It may not be ideal, but it may just work.

Turnovers

Washington will need to take advantage of any extra opportunity that they get in this game. You can force Brady into mistakes. He will hurry and force some throws to prevent from getting hit. After all, he is a pretty boy that does not like getting hit. When Washington has these extra opportunities they need to make sure they are putting points on the board. Even if it is a FG. 3 points are better than no points.

Time of Possession

Washington will need to win the Time of Possession battle to stay in this game. The more times that Tress Way sees the field, the more the defense has to exert. The Washington offense needs to convert third downs and extend drives. It will be imperative for the success of the defense that the offense of the Washington Football Team possesses the ball 28-35 minutes in this game.

The Washington Football Team has a chance to pull off a big upset this weekend. It will not be a big surprise if they are in a one-score type game entering the fourth quarter. At that point, anything can happen. As I always say in these big games when no one is giving Washington a chance to win, “Keep Calm and Shock the World”!
