Denver Broncos: Five Possible Replacements for Drew Lock

The Denver Broncos have struggled at the QB position since the retirement of Peyton Manning. They have gone through multiple options at the most important position in the NFL. The latest arm is Drew Lock. The Broncos selected Lock in the second round of the 2019 NFL Draft. As a rookie, he went 4-1 in his five starts with the team. In his second season, Lock went 4-9. This is prompting fans to call for a QB change. In saying that, we look at five possible replacements for the Broncos young QB.

Sam Darnold – New York Jets

The Jets are going to be under a new regime. More often than not, that results in a QB change. I have always said that the Jets have the talent and they were just under bad leadership. Nonetheless, Darnold could be available. With the weapons that the Denver Broncos have on offense, Darnold could easily excel. Darnold is a good QB who is currently in a bad situation.

Tyrod Taylor – Los Angeles Chargers

The Chargers are another team that is going through a coaching change. Taylor is another talented QB. He has always been placed in a “bridge” situation. Taylor is very accurate and mobile. He takes care of the football. Again, I believe that with the weapons that the Broncos have on offense, Taylor could come in and excel in blue and orange.

NFL Draft

Starting over with a young arm in the draft is definitely another option. Former GM John Elway has taken a promotion with the organization. That will lead to the hiring of a new GM. Thus, they could look into the draft as an option. The Broncos hold the 9th pick of the first round. This draft is certainly deep at QB. So much that a team could possibly grab a franchise QB in the second round as well.

Cam Newton – New England Patriots

It is recently reported that Newton and the Patriots will part ways after just one season. Yes, I know that Cam had a horrible year as well. Nevertheless, I still believe that there is something left for Newton to prove. Again, the Denver Broncos have weapons on offense. Jerry Jeudy, Noah Fant, Phillip Lindsay, and Melvin Gordon are all highly productive. Additionally, Courtland Sutton will be returning from injury. This would be the best set of weapons that Newton has had since Steve Smith, Devin Funchess, and DeAngelo Williams.

Jameis Winston – New Orleans Saints

Winston signed a 0ne-year deal with the New Orleans Saints. Many believed this would turn into a new contract in the offseason. However, when Drew Brees went down with a rib injury, Winston was overlooked for Taysom Hill. Winston still wants to start. I do not think that will happen in New Orleans. Going to the Denver Broncos would get Winston into a solid situation that he may be able to excel in.

The Denver Broncos are close to being a playoff contender. A solid QB and a good draft could see them compete again. If they are set to move one from Drew Lock after two seasons, bringing in a veteran may be a better option. It will be an interesting conversation once the Broncos hire a new GM. Stay tuned!
