Cotton Bowl: Taking a Look at the Florida Gators vs Oklahoma Sooners
There are still good bowl games other than the two that will decide the national champion. One of those is the Cotton Bowl. This year the matchup will be the Big 12 representative of the Oklahoma Sooners versus the SEC representative of the Florida Gators. Both teams had a good season in fact with the Sooners they won their conference championship. Oklahoma finished with an 8-2 regular-season record and win a seven-game winning streak. In the last game they played in they defeated the Iowa State Cyclones who finished at an 8-3 record. For the Florida Gators, they lost their conference championship game to the Alabama Crimson Tide. The game was much closer than many thought it would be. Losing by only six-point 52-46. The Gators finished with an 8-3 regular-season record. These two teams will do battle in just a few days right before 2021.
The Sooners sit as the number six team in the country. Many will say why are they not getting a shot at the national title. That is a question that should be asked by the Championship Committee. If any year that there should have been eight teams this was that year just to test out and see what it would look like. I believe the Sooners would have been one of those eight teams in with all five conference champions in. Oklahoma only had two losses all year one early in the season as many called it an upset to the Kansas State Wildcats. The other loss came against the Iowa State Cyclones, but they would revenge that on a bigger stage. The last time they played the Florida Gators was in the national championship game which the Gators won. Is it time for the Sooners to get some revenge?
The Florida Gators are currently at 8-3 heading into the Cotton Bowl. They too had an early-season loss to the Texas A&M Aggies by a field goal. Like the Oklahoma Sooners, the Aggies also believe they should be in the college football playoff. Like the Sooners, the Gators would have an upset loss as well this coming just a few weeks ago to the LSU Tigers who had an awful season after winning the National Championship in 2019. When they played the Alabama Crimson Tide many thought it would be a blowout win for the Tide. The Gators made a game out of it and nearly stole the SEC away. Florida comes into yet another New Years Bowl game. They won last year over Virginia in the Orange Bowl. Dan Mullen has this team clicking and could very close to being in the college football playoff next year.
The Florida Gators will be without four of their top receivers. Three of them have decided to skip the Cotton Bowl to prepare for the NFL Draft. Those are Kyle Pitts, Trevon Grimes, and Kadarius Toney who will all be good NFL players. Jacob Copeland will miss because of positive COVID-19 tests. The Gators still have Kyle Trask for one more game. Look for Florida to feature their run game against the Sooners defense. The Sooners will also be ready for the Gators. Florida will test the Sooners defense which has gotten better as of late. I think this will be a back-and-forth game or a blowout.
