USF Bulls: Gazing Through the Lense of a Third-Year Writer
It has been a great opportunity for me to be able to cover USF football for the past three years. I have experienced many different things from the blow out wins to blow out losses. I have also seen many different types of crowds and fan bases. When the Bulls play a big power five schools the fan bases travel very well. One of the schools in the same conference is the UCF Golden Knights. The Knights have dominated USF for the past few years. One of the most exciting games that I went to happened in my first year. Terrence Horne had two 90 plus kickoff returns against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. That game took place in the afternoon and the crowd and press box was electric when that happened. This year was much different from the first two years.
The major reason is a reason that has changed our lives for the foreseeable future. The coronavirus changed how the press box operates. In the past, we would have notes handed to us after every quarter at the half and the end of the game. This year they told us that we could only get the notes on paper after the game. Most of the notes went virtually and we can always go online to get so same notes. In the first two years when it came to the food, they would bring out the food in banquet style. With Covid-19 that did not happen. We can no touch things others have touched. We were also spaced out to every other seat and not next to each other because of the CDC six-foot rule. The USF games were still fun but different.
We also had to take a Covid-19 questionnaire on game day. This was part of the USF games from Raymond James Stadium where the Bulls play all of their home games. We also had to wear a mask the entire time in the press box except when we were eating or drinking. The staff also had someone constantly cleaning surfaces. These were all safety precautions so that we could attend the games. I will be honest I did not think I would be going to any of the games. There were five home games this year I missed only two of them. One of them happened why I was on vacation the other was canceled because of Covid-19. For the other three, we had to follow protocol. I was just happy to have the opportunity to attend the games.
Besides all of the changes, I witnessed something at a USF game that I hope does not happen for a while. That was the very first game I attend this year. This event was seeing no fans at all at a college football game. At the start of the season, there were no fans allowed to attend the games. It was scary and eerie about no fans. The Bulls pumped in sound when they scored any kind of points or big plays. I am looking forward to years to come just for the fun and love of the USF Bulls.
