New York Giants: Should They Draft DeVonta Smith or Ja’Marr Chase?
The New York Giants at the moment are back in second place in the NFC East and they would also be drafting at number 10 in the NFL Draft if the season ended today. New York has one of the worst wide receiver cores and tandems in the NFL.
The Giants should sign free agent Allen Robinson II from the Chicago Bears in the offseason and also draft either Ja’Marr Chase from LSU or DeVonta Smith from Alabama.
The question is, which one should they go with?
Well, I think it is going to depend upon who is available and who is picking where.
At the current moment, the first five selections: 1. New York Jets, 2. Jacksonville Jaguars, 3. Cincinnati Bengals, 4. Los Angeles Chargers, and 5. Dallas Cowboys will not take them.
The Carolina Panthers own the sixth pick and they could be a threat, but I think they will take a quarterback and make sure he sits behind Teddy Bridgewater.
The Atlanta Falcons own the seventh pick and they will take someone on the defensive side of the football or they will find Matt Ryan’s future replacement.
The Miami Dolphins own the eighth pick and this pick is originally the Houston Texans’s. This is where DeVonta Smith could go off the board here and reunite with college teammate Tua Tagovailoa.
The Philadelphia Eagles own the ninth pick and I think they will take an offensive lineman.
This is the pick here where they would draft Ja’Marr Chase.
Chase opted out of the 2020 college football season due to the coronavirus. He was a two-year starter at LSU. Ja’Marr Chase is only 20 years old. He caught 107 passes for 2,093 yards receiving and 23 touchdowns in two seasons with them.
Top of the Line
Chase won the National Championship with LSU over Clemson last season. He was catching passes from Joe Burrow and Ja’Marr Chase was on the other side of Justin Jefferson.
Jefferson was a first-round pick to the Minnesota Vikings this past season and he is on pace for the Offensive Rookie of the Year in the NFL.
Some people think that Ja’Marr Chase is better than Justin Jefferson. Well if that’s the case, he is going to be something special at the next level then.
However, what if DeVonta Smith isn’t taken by the tenth pick? Well, he is born with natural speed and has tremendous hands. Smith runs amazing routes and never gives up on a play and blocks tremendously well in the running game.
Some people think he is the best out of Jerry Jeudy, Henry Ruggs III, and Jaylen Waddle.
Smith has caught 83 passes for 1,327 receiving yards and 15 touchdowns so far this season. He is 22 years old.
If DeVonta Smith and Ja’Marr Chase were both available for the New York Giants, I would take Smith over Chase. However, if one of these two are available, I would take one of these two over the rest of the board.
Both of these players would be major upgrades.
Darius Slayton, Golden Tate, and Sterling Shepard are the top three wide receiver options on the field at the moment. Austin Mack is the fourth.
The tight end room is Evan Engram and Kaden Smith.
If they got rid of Tate and signed Robinson and drafted Chase, those two would be the top two wide receiver targets for Daniel Jones right away. Slayton and Shepard would then become the third and fourth options.
Ja’Marr Chase would be the heartbeat and the heart and soul of the New York Giants wide receiver group if they drafted him. Chase is a game-breaker they desperately need on the perimeter.
They will also be getting back running back Saquon Barkley back at the running back position next season. Wayne Gallman Jr. will be featured as a serviceable number two running back.
Head coach Joe Judge, offensive coordinator Jason Garrett, and general manager Dave Gettleman (if he’s still the general manager for the 2021 season) will need to look at this wide receiver position desperately this upcoming offseason.
The current NFC East Standings at the moment: 1. Washington Football Team (6-7) 2. New York Giants (5-8) 3. Philadelphia Eagles (4-8-1) and 4. Dallas Cowboys (4-9).
The New York Giants (5-8) next game will be at home on Sunday night against the Cleveland Browns (9-4).
