Army-Navy: Three Studs From America’s Game

The 121st version of America’s game in the Army-Navy game happened today. It was under different circumstances. Normally the game takes place at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania home of the Philadelphia Eagles. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, it was played at Michie Stadium at West Point, New York. This was the first time since 1943 the game was played here. The previous three meetings were all won by the Navy Midshipmen. Today the Army Black Knights shut out Navy.

The game was played under a heavy fog that made it hard for the broadcasters and even harder for players and coaches. One of the biggest differences with this game is that all these gentlemen will be going off to defend our freedom in their respected branch, not to the NFL. It was cool to still see cadets from each of the academies normally there are more.

Tyhier Tyler

We all that the Army Black Knights run the triple-option offense. That means we will see very few pass attempts. Watching the game Tyler does something you see very few other college quarterbacks do. That is under center on 95% of the offensive snaps. One bright fact about this game is that Tyler was 1/1 for 28 yards on his pass. On the ground is where he made the biggest impact. Tyler had 26 carries for 96 yards and one touchdown. His longest run was for 28 yards. Today he made plays when the Black Knights need him to make them in the Army-Navy game.

Army Black Knights Defense

One of the biggest plays was stopping the Navy Midshipmen on a fourth goal and off the scoreboard. Navy only had 117 total yards. The Midshipmen were only 1/11 on third-down conversions and 0/2 on fourth down conversions. One of the most common aspects is that triple-option offenses go for it on fourth down. The Black Knights defense cause the only turnover of the game with a fumble. Army also held Navy to 24:44 on time of possession. The Black Knights never looked like they were put on their toes during the Army-Navy game. They brought in Nate Woody to get the defense on track and he did just that this year.

Army Black Knights Run Game

As a team that had 53 carries for 134 yards. Led by quarterback Tyhier Tyler. There was seven other Black Knight that help get them to 134 yards. After Tyler, the next two highest rushers were Tyrell Robinson and AJ Howard. Robinson had five carries for 13 yards. Howard had two carries for 12 yards. Like I mentioned before the triple-option offense relies big on the run game. The one offensive touchdown came from the run game. Both teams are geared with the run and the team that has the better ground game wins the Army-Navy game.

This was the first time since 1969 since the Navy Midshipmen had been shutout by the Army Black Knights in the Army-Navy game. That day it was 27-0 and today 15-0. This game means so much more. Before the game started the parents of some of the players say that their children are making the biggest sacrifice. They will go off and defend our freedom. That means they could lose their life doing what they love and chose to do. This is a game that I never miss, and it always brings me to tears when it starts and ends. I will be back next year and for as long I can watch the Army-Navy game.
