New York Giants: General Manager Dave Gettleman May Be Safe After All
The New York Giants started the season 1-7 and it appeared General Manager Dave Gettleman was going to be on the hot seat. However, New York has won four consecutive games and they sit atop the NFC (L)East standings at the moment.
The Giants are favored to win the division and if they don’t win the division this season, he may stick around for a few reasons.
The first reason why he is going to stay in 2021 is that he nailed the 2020 NFL Draft.
A lot of players from that class are currently playing on the field.
Gettleman nailed three offensive linemen in Andrew Thomas, Matt Peart, and Shane Lemieux and they are all currently starting.
Xavier McKinney is just getting his feet wet at the safety position. He was hurt to start the season and is seeing limited snaps and playing in some nickel and dime packages. McKinney will have a much bigger and expanded role next season.
Cornerback Darnay Holmes was drafted in the fourth round and has played well in nickel and dime packages as well. Holmes is the third or fourth cornerback on the roster. He will improve as time goes on. Darnay Holmes also picked off Russell Wilson on Sunday in a 17-12 win over the Seattle Seahawks on the road in an upset.
Linebackers Cam Brown, Carter Coughlin, and Tae Crowder were picked in the sixth and seventh rounds. They are all seeing timely downs and snaps with injuries at the linebacker position.
Undrafted linebacker Niko Lalos has played well in his first two games. He was demoted back to the practice squad, but expect him to be signed to the 53-man roster for the rest of the regular season.
The second reason why Gettleman will be back next season is that he hired the right head coach in Joe Judge. Judge was the special teams coordinator for the New England Patriots and his players are buying into his system and are getting better every single week.
Joe Judge is all about the fundamentals. This team started 1-7 and they also started 0-5. A team that has started 0-5 has never made it to the NFL Playoffs. If they don’t make it this season, the New York Giants are on track to make it to the playoffs next season.
New York is a healthy Saquon Barkley and a potential dynamic wide receiver on the outside away from being a very dangerous football team for years to come. Offensive coordinator Jason Garrett and defensive coordinator Patrick Graham have been the right coordinators for the job here as well.
The third reason why Dave Gettleman will be back next season is because of his free-agent signings. Specifically, cornerback/safety Logan Ryan, cornerback James Bradberry, and linebacker Blake Martinez.
These three have gelled in an improved New York Giants defense and they have a Top 10 defense in the NFL.
This defensive unit is the heart and soul of the New York Giants. It keeps this team in many games and it has also won them some games this season.
It is safe to say that this team needed a preseason. They could have a much better record if that was the case. Also, this is going to be fun to watch this team down the stretch.
The current NFC East Standings are: 1. New York Giants (5-7) 2. Washington Football Team (5-7) 3. Philadelphia Eagles (3-8-1) and 4. Dallas Cowboys (3-8).
New York defeated Washington twice, so that will be a very good tiebreaker for them in order to decide the division title.
With this football team showing signs of improvement, the Mara’s and Tisch’s are probably thrilled that this season is going much better than anticipated.
The next game for the New York Giants (5-7) will be at home against a struggling Arizona Cardinals (6-6) football team next Sunday.
