USF Bulls: Looking Back on the 2020 Season

The USF Bulls football season has come to an end. It was not the season that fans were hoping for. The Bulls finished the season with a 1-8 record. They also did not win one conference game. The only game that USF won was against the Citadel which was the first game of the year. Many can say that there were many factors on why the season ended as it did. The first is a rookie head coach in Jeff Scott. Scott cane from a Clemson program that has been dominating for the past few years. Scott is dealing with players that recruited by former head coach Charlie Strong. On top of that, we had the coronavirus pandemic that shut down everything. It made hard for the staff to recruit because you could not meet anyone in person. However, with what happened last week against the UCF Knights the future looks good.

Citadel Bulldogs

The one and only win the USF Bulls had was against The Citadel Bulldogs. That was one of the two non-conference games in 2020 for them. The final was 27-6 and the Bulls did a good job in all three facets. The Bulldogs run an option style offense that many teams have trouble covering. At the start of the game, the USF defense struggled but made adjustments in which they were able to hold them to just two field goals.

Notre Dame Fighting Irish

Following the win over Citadel, they faced off with the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. This was one of the teams that AD Michael Kelly got the Bulls to play to get the name of the program out there. The game was not good at all for USF the Irish dominated them throughout the game. No matter what the Bulls did the answer was no and the final score was 52-0.

Cincinnati Bearcats

After this game, the conference play began. The first game would be against the Cincinnati Bearcats. The same Bearcats they lost to a year ago on a game-winning field goal. This was the first game that we saw the USF Bulls had a big offensive problem. They did not have a passing game. The starting quarterback was a problem all season long. In their only win, there were three quarterbacks used. The Bearcats are a good football team that is currently ranked in the top ten in the country. Cincinnati defense gave nothing to the Bulls as they fell 28-7.

East Carolina Pirates

The first home AAC game was against the East Carolina Pirates. This was a team the Bulls had a good history with. This year was not the same the Pirates took advantage of USF and got a win with a 44-24 final score.

Temple Owls

The USF Bulls then traveled on the road to Philadelphia. Their opponent was the Temple Owls. The Owls have had the Bulls number for a while. This was the first game that USF was close to winning. The Bulls used their run game to get close but the one glaring mistake was turnovers that hurt them. A turnover towards the end of the game cost them as the Owls scored on it and the game ended in a 39-37 loss.

Tulsa Golden Hurricanes

USF returned home to play the Tulsa Golden Hurricanes. The Golden Hurricanes were one of the teams on the rise in the AAC. Tulsa like Temple used turnovers to keep the Bulls at bay. USF never had a chance in a 42-13 loss. Many of the fans thought maybe the second win would never come. Maybe it would come against the Memphis Tigers.

Memphis Tigers

The Tigers were the team that had won the conference the previous two years. I would say that up till this point in the season this was a game the USF Bulls should have won. In this game, they were in the end. This game like many they were not supposed to win or even be close to winning. In this game, they made very few mistakes. The unfortunate part was they would lose 34-33.

Houston Cougars

Everything looked good after that game as they headed to Houston. Their opponent would be the Houston Cougars. The same Cougars who have had the Bulls number for a while. The game did not start off well as in three plays Houston scored and the Bulls never seem too able to catch up. USF did score 21 points but allowed the Cougars’ offense to opposing their will all game long. The final score was 56-21.

Navy Midshipmen

That left two games on the schedule. The first one was against the Navy Midshipmen. Navy handed the USF Bulls a beat down in 2019. All eyes were hoping they could get some revenge. The game would never be played because of the coronavirus. The Bulls had some positive tests and the game was canceled.

UCF Golden Knights

That left the war on I4 game against the UCF Golden Knights. The Knights have won the past three games. This game was much more than the Knights were accepting. Head coach Jeff Scott told them just play football. That is what the Bulls did and nearly came away from a win. Everything that went wrong during the season went right in this game. USF got within seven points and had a rare miscue that UCF took advantage of. USF would lose their final game 58-46. We are hoping for a better 2021 season.
