Washington Football Team: Five Keys vs the Detroit Lions

The Washington Football Team travels to Ford Field to take on the Detroit Lions in week ten action. For Washington, it is a chance to start a winning streak. One that could vault them into first place in a weak division. However, a loss would almost kill any of those chances. Washington will need to focus on a few keys to make it all work on Sunday. Let us look at some of those keys to victory for the Washington Football Team.

Alex Smith

Alex will be starting his first game in nearly 2 years. His last start for Washington came on November 18, 2018, against the Houston Texans. Smith knows this offense. He is capable of moving the ball up and down the field. The 2020 NFL Comeback Player of the Year, yes I am calling him that already, needs to play as he played last week without the turnovers. If he can be the same QB without the turnovers, Washington will be in great shape.

Running Game

The running game is huge for success on Sunday. The Lions come into this game 30th against the run. Last week the Minnesota Vikings ran all over them for almost 300 yards. Dalvin Cook had over 200 yards alone. The big boys up front need to push around the Lions D-Line and let Antonio Gibson and J.D. McKissic forge their way through holes.

A successful running game will also be key for Alex Smith. He is better when he can run play action and read. If Washington can establish the run early, Alex could have another big day.

Fast Start

This season, Washington has only had one fast start and that was against the Dallas Cowboys. They won that game going away. Falling behind early has not boded well for this team. Getting out early and obtaining a lead will allow Defensive Coordinator, Jack Del Rio to be more aggressive in his play-calling.

Defense

The defense is key to the above key for Washington. Maybe Head Coach, Ron Rivera should receive the ball if they win the toss this week. Put the offense on the field first and get points. Let your defense play with a lead and see if they play differently on the opponent’s first drive. Shit, even if it is just three points they are opening with the lead.

Turnovers

Washington has to limit their turnovers. They are not a good enough football team at this point to come back from large deficits. They will need to protect the football and make costly errors. Five turnovers last week against the New York Giants is what did them in.

On the flip side, the defense needs to find a way to create turnovers. They were getting them earlier in the season. All of a sudden that has stopped. Washington is currently 29th in turnover differential (-6). They only have nine takeaways on the year. Matt Stafford will make mistakes of Washington can force the issue.

The Washington Football Team is still mathematically alive for the NFC East. Although, it is going to take some work. They will need to get some outside help from teams playing the Philadelphia Eagles as well. Nonetheless, their focus needs to be on these keys and handling their own business on Sunday. Start fast; run the ball, get turnovers, and Washington will come home with a week 10 win.
