NFL: Who is on the Coaching Hot Seat?
Coaching changes in the NFL are a yearly thing. After each season there is a plethora of coaches that are looking for new work. Some are even looking for new work during the season. That is the current case for Dan Quinn (Atlanta Falcons) and Bill O’Brien (Houston Texans). However, there are several other coaches that could be looking for new work in 2021. Here is a look at 5 coaches who are on the hot seat after week 9 in the NFL.
Adam Gase – New York Jets
Gase was one of the hottest coaching names when the Miami Dolphins hired him back in 2016. Now it is surprising that Gase is still employed honestly. The New York Jets are an absolute train wreck. They now sit at 0-9 on the season. The way that their schedule sits, it is hard to see them winning a game this season. One thing is certain, the Jets cannot lose this week as they are on their bye week.
Matt Patricia – Detroit Lions
Patricia was one of the hottest names coming off the Bill Belichick tree. Since he has been in Detroit, he has yet to have a winning season. Here in year three of his tenure, the Lions currently are 3-4. The front office of the Lions basically gave Patricia and his staff an ultimatum at the beginning of year. Be a winner or be you will be gone. With many assistant coaches ready to be head coaches in the NFL, it is not surprising that teams do not have patience anymore.
Doug Marrone – Jacksonville Jaguars
Marrone and the Jaguars are struggling. Instead of going with a big name QB in the offseason, they decided to make Gardner Minshew II the starter. While at times that looks like a genious move, other times it does not. Now they are on rookie QB Jake Luton. Marrone could be the second coach within the division that is looking for work in 2021.
Mike Zimmer – Minnesota Vikings
Even though the Vikings signed Zimmer to an extension in July, many still believe his seat is warm. He may not be as hot as the coaches above, but “Zim” is believed to be in the conversation. The Vikings are 3-5 and tied for third in the NFC North. While I do not believe that the Vikings will release Zimmer at season’s end, there is always a surprise or two in the NFL coaching carousel every year.
Vic Fangio – Denver Broncos
Fangio is another coach whose seat is not as hot as some. Nonetheless, we will put him on the list. His seat is warm but I believe that GM John Elway will have patience. Especially with the strangeness of this NFL season. Denver is 3-5 on the season and in third place of the AFC West. With the youth on this offense and the injuries suffered on defense, this could save Fangio for one more season.
This NFL has been a strange one. We have already had a reshuffling of the schedule, gruesome injuries, and early in-season firings. Nothing would surprise me after the season either. However, it will be interesting to see who stay and who goes when Black Monday arrives in 2021.
