Golf: A 2020 Preview for The Masters Tournament in Augusta

One of the most prestigious golf tournaments is taking place this week. Normally it takes place in April. It was delayed because of Covid-19. The tournament I referring to is the Masters. It takes place at Augusta National in Augusta, Georgia. The Masters is usually the first major on the golf schedule. This year it will be the last of three as the Open Championship or British Open was canceled. The winner gets a green jacket which every winner and the member receives. The winner also gets to host dinner the year after they win they get to choose the type of food that is served. Augusta National is looking different this time of the year in April there are bright colors with flowers and greens. This time of the year the leaves are falling so we are starting to see the change of seasons.

Tiger Time

Last year the winner was Tiger Woods. He has won the Masters five times and is one from tying Jack Nicklaus who has six. Woods broke down with tears during a press conference on referring back to his win in 2019. I will say that I was in tears seeing him last year with all of the physical issues. If you’re wondering who invented Augusta National and the Masters’ tournament that was Bobby Jones. Jones is considered to be one of the best golfers of all time. When the tournament begins on Thursday it will start with Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player teeing off. It used to be Arnold Palmer as the great three but Palmer passed away a few years ago. It was announced that Lee Elder the first African-American player to play in the Masters will join Nicklaus and Player in 2021.

Past champion Sergio Garcia will not play in the Masters because he tested positive for coronavirus. The field has the biggest stars like Bryson DeChambeau who won the U.S. Open. Viewers will also see Jon Rahm, Dustin Johnson, Justin Thomas, and Collin Morikawa. Morikawa won the other major the PGA Championship earlier this year. There will be other superstars and legends of the game like Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson. All of them will be challenging and when it comes to Sunday there seems to be some magic in the air. Sometimes that magic could be good and at others bad. All of the players will have to go through a series of holes named Amen Corner. Those are holes 11, 12, and 13. One is par four that would 11, one is a par three that is 12, and one is a par five that is 13.

Meaningful Masters

The Masters is a golf tournament is very close to me. The reason is that my uncle the gentlemen that taught me the game of golf at the age of five this was his favorite tournament of the year. To me, no matter who wins it is great to watch. To be honest I do not know who is going to win. There are so many good players in the field. Some of them want to see a first-time winner like the first two majors in 2020. On the other hand who would argue if Tiger wins his six Masters? Many say he does not have many more opportunities to win majors. Either way, it will be a great way to end the majors’ season in golf!
