NFL Rumors: Top 5 Landing Spots for RB Le’Veon Bell
For Le’Veon Bell a strong start to a promising career has taken a turn for the worst. First, there was the season-long holdout from the Pittsburgh Steelers. Next, he signs a free agent contract with the New York Jets. After that, he gets hurt and misses most of the 2019 season. That is followed by the unexpected COVID-19 shutdown. Finally, on Tuesday the New York Jets released the veteran RB. His release comes after Bell liked a few tweets on Twitter regarding his usage.
In seeing that the Jets released Bell, it is only a matter of time before a team comes knocking. I am sure he will have plenty of suitors. Thus, we look at some of the top contenders to land the services of Le’Veon Bell in 2020.
With the Jags trading away their first-round pick, Leonard Fournette, they make the most sense. Although, James Robinson has filled in nicely. Locking Bell up would not only help the Jacksonville offense in the run game, but it will also help in the passing game. Le’Veon Bell can block and has one of the softest set of hands. Adding him to help Gardner Minshew would be a fabulous situation.
Los Angeles Chargers
The Chargers will be without the services of starting RB Austin Ekeler for a while. While they have capable backs to fill-in for Ekeler, Bell may be more the team’s speed. He could come in and take over for a team that is struggling to run the ball. It could be an insane pairing when Austin Ekeler comes back healthy.
San Francisco 49ers
Imagine Le’Veon Bell in a Kyle Shanahan, run-first offense. I will give you a minute to let that soak in….. Bell would thrive in that offense. Not only is it run-first but the RBs have to be ready to catch the ball as well. Bell has great hands out of the backfield. This could easily take some pressure off Jimmy Garappolo. Especially with the injuries to Rheem Mostert and Tevin Coleman.
We talked about the Texans being a landing spot for Bell during the free agency period of 2019. Now brings up another opportunity to add them to the mix. Yes, they acquired David Johnson in the DeAndre Hopkins trade. However, he has not lived up to expectations. Adding a player such as Le’Veon Bell would help David Johnson return to form this season. It also give Interim Head Coach Romeo Crennel another weapon for that offense.
New England Patriots
Signing Le’Veon Bell would be a typical Bill Belichick signing. An unwanted veteran with gas still left in the tank. It would also give QB Cam Newton someone that is skilled and can be a three-down player. The Patriots are trying to keep their offense balanced. Adding Bell would give them the ability to do that without having to run Cam Newton into the ground.
These five teams should all try to make a run at Le’Veon Bell. All for various reasons. I will admit he still has some gas left in the tank. How much? Well, that is yet to be seen. Nevertheless, it will be interesting to see where he signs with in the coming days.
