Houston Texans: Bill O’Brien Fired as the Head Coach

The Houston Texans have decided to fire Bill O’Brien from the Houston Texans organization. He was the general manager and the head coach of this football team. Houston is 0-4 to start the season and they will be a massive hole. Romeo Crennel, the defensive coordinator for the Houston Texans, will take over as the interim head coach and he is 73 years old.

The Texans don’t have a first-round pick or a second-round pick in the upcoming 2021 NFL Draft because both of those selections belong to the Miami Dolphins via the Laremy Tunsil and Kenny Stills trade.

O’Brien should have been fired after the Houston Texans blew a 24-0 lead against the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC Divisional Round. Houston will now need to find a way to get draft capital and potentially start over, despite having Deshaun Watson on the team.

Watson is the heart and soul of this football team. He will need more help around him.

O’Brien traded away his top wide receiver target DeAndre Hopkins to the Arizona Cardinals in the offseason though. Having Brandin Cooks, Randall Cobb, Will Fuller V, and Kenny Stills doesn’t feel the same. Jordan Akins isn’t a good tight end. They have a horrible offensive line and a terrible defensive unit.

Defensive end J.J. Watt should request a trade to be with his brothers Derek and T.J. Watt in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

David Johnson is the current running back for the Houston Texans though.

Bill O’Brien was there for six plus seasons since 2014. His record was 52-48. His playoff record was 2-4. They won the AFC South four times in 2014, 2015, 2018, and in 2019.

Some of the potential head coaching candidates for the Houston Texans could be Dabo Sweeney (Clemson Head Coach), Lincoln Riley (Oklahoma Head Coach), Eric Bieniemy (Kansas City Chiefs Offensive Coordinator), and Brian Daboll (Buffalo Bills Offensive Coordinator).

This was the right move for the Houston Texans to fire Bill O’Brien now. If Deshaun Watson had not signed his four-year contract extension worth around $165 million, it would have been possible to see him bolt in the offseason, but they need to change this roster in a hurry whoever is the new general manager though.

The AFC South is sometimes a tough division and it is sometimes a weak division. The Tennessee Titans (3-0), the Indianapolis Colts (3-1), and the Jacksonville Jaguars (1-3) are all ahead of them in the division right now though.

Houston had a tough schedule to start the season. They faced the Kansas City Chiefs (4-0), the Baltimore Ravens (3-1), the Pittsburgh Steelers (3-0), and the Minnesota Vikings (1-3).

They lost to the Minnesota Vikings 31-23 on Sunday at home at NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas. The Texans will host the Jaguars on Sunday at 1 p.m. Eastern on CBS and we will see if Houston can crack the win column though.

The only three other teams to have yet to win a game this season is the Atlanta Falcons, the New York Jets, and the New York Giants though.
