Alexis Lafreniere Drafted Number One Overall

The NHL Draft was supposed to be back in June at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec. However, due to the unforeseen circumstances of the coronavirus, the NHL Draft in 2020 had to be held virtually in the month of October. The first round of the NHL Draft was on Tuesday night. The New York Rangers selected Alexis Lafreniere with the number one overall pick.

Lucky Lafreniere

Lafreniere played his junior hockey in the QMJHL with the Rimouski Oceanic. He is the second player to be drafted number one overall from that team since 2005 where Sidney Crosby of the Pittsburgh Penguins was drafted then.

Alexis Lafreniere is supposed to be a stud at the next level. He is going to shine under the bright lights of Madison Square Garden in New York, New York.

This team hasn’t won a Stanley Cup Title since the 1994 season in seven games against the Vancouver Canucks. The last time the New York Rangers were in the Stanley Cup Finals was in 2014 against the Los Angeles Kings, where they lost to them in five games.

New New York

New York is going to be a very fun team to watch moving forward under Head Coach David Quinn, but Assistant Coach Jacques Martin could be the next head coach if they get off to a slow start.

Artemi Panarin, Chris Kreider, Mika Zibanejad, Igor Shesterkin, Alexandar Georgiev, and Adam Fox are some of the key pieces on this hockey club moving forward though.

Lafreniere will be the future captain of this hockey team though. He is only 18 years old and will probably be on one of the top two lines to start next season, which probably won’t begin until at least January 1, 2021, according to NHL commissioner Gary Bettman.

Alexis Lafreniere will be the heartbeat of this team down the road. He is going to hopefully be a goal-scoring machine right away for this franchise.

History of the No. 1 Pick

Lafreniere played in the QMJHL for three seasons. In 52 games with the Rimouski Oceanic in the QMJHL last season, he scored 35 goals and recorded 77 assists. His plus/minus was 41.

The New York Rangers hope this transitions to the NHL level though. This is going to be a tough division to play in. New York has to deal with the New Jersey Devils, the New York Islanders, the Philadelphia Flyers, the Pittsburgh Penguins, the Washington Capitals, the Carolina Hurricanes, and the Columbus Blue Jackets, in the Metropolitan Division though.

The future looks bright for the New York Rangers with Alexis Lafreniere at the helm though.

If he doesn’t produce, that would be not very good for this franchise. They are thinking of multiple Stanley Cups.

Kaapo Kakko was selected second overall in the 2019 NHL Draft though. Jeff Gorton is the current general manager for the New York Rangers. He has done a tremendous job scouting and evaluating talent and building this team from the ground up though.
