Washington Football Team: The Good, Bad, and WTF vs Cleveland Browns
Week 3 saw the Washington Football Team head to the shores of Lake Erie to take on the Cleveland Browns. This was a game for Washington that was very winnable. Nonetheless, that did not happen. They fell to Cleveland 34-20. There was plenty of bad in this game, but there was also some good and some that made you say WTF as well. Thus, we will take a look at all three areas.
Sweat was one of the few bright spots for Washington on Sunday. He started the second half of the game as a one-man wrecking crew against the Browns offense. After a three and out to start the half for the Washington offense, Sweat chased down Baker Mayfield and forced him into an Intentional Grounding penalty. Then on Cleveland’s next drive, Sweat again forced his way into the backfield for a sack. He was making life miserable for left tackle Jedrick Wills Jr. on the day.
Inman was the lone recipient of the two TDs that Haskins threw. Washington needs another target to step up outside of Terry McLaurin, today it was Inman. He finished the game with three receptions for 38 and 2 TDs. Inman would leave with a hand injury that will certainly be something to keep an eye on going forward.
We stated in our keys this week that Washington’s run defense needed to step up and keep the Browns at bay. In turn, putting the game in the hands of Baker Mayfield. That did not happen. Cleveland ran for 158 yards on 37 carries. Nick Chubb with 108 of those yards led them on 19 carries. Chubb also had 2 TDs. Washington is going to face some run-heavy teams in the coming weeks. They will need to make sure they get this locked down or they could find the season slip away in a hurry.
Haskins had certainly had his moments on Sunday. However, in the end, his play was ugly. Haskins only completed 21 passes for 224 yards, 2 TDs, and 3 INTs. The three INTs were the problem. On all three of those passes, Haskins stared down his receivers. Looking at them from snap to throw. This is a major improvement that Haskins will need to make going forward. If he does not, Washington will be looking for a new QB in the 2021 NFL Draft.
The Washington Football Team had five turnovers on Sunday. Four of those were at the hands of Haskins. Not only did Haskins throw the three INTs we previously mentioned, but he also lost a fumble on a sack. Antonio Gibson also lost a fumble at the end of the first half. Cleveland had zero on the day. Washington is not good enough to overcome one turnover, let alone five on the day. This will need to be a major talking point in meetings and practice this week as they prepare for the Baltimore Ravens in week four.
Washington is a young football team. However, any team could avoid the mistakes that Washington made today. They have a tough stretch coming up with games against the Baltimore Ravens, Los Angeles Rams, and Dallas Cowboys in three of the next 4 weeks. This team will need to grow-up over that stretch or see a season slip away.
