Jacksonville Jaguars: Are They Better Than Advertised With Gardner Minshew?
The Jacksonville Jaguars have had their fair share of QBs. Mark Brunell, Byron Leftwich, David Garrard, and Blake Bortles have all donned the black and teal. These are all QBs who have taken this team to the postseason. Currently, the Jaguars are using Gardner Minshew II as their starting quarterback. Many believe that Minshew is just a stop-gap leading to Trevor Lawrence (the outstanding Clemson star). However, he is showing to be more than that. Could the Jaguars quite possibly be better with Minshew than advertised?
In 2019, the Jacksonville Jaguars drafted Gardner Minshew in the 6th round out of Washington State. He only played one year for the Cougars after transferring from East Carolina. As a member of the Cougars, Minshew compiled a record of 11-2. He threw for 4,776 yards and 38 TDs while completing 71% of his passes. Thus, the reason why The Jaguars drafted him and did not sign him as an unrestricted free agent.
Minshew did not have to wait long for his shot in the NFL. He made his debut in week one of the 2019 season as a rookie. Free Agent signee. Nick Foles went down with a shoulder injury and Gardner Minshew stepped in. His debut was better than many expected going 22 of 25 for 275 yards 2 TDs and 1 INT. The Jaguars would lose the game but Minshew Mania would begin to trend.
While 2020 has been a question for most in the world, for Gardner Minshew it has been one of peace. In the offseason, the Jacksonville Jaguars traded Nick Foles to the Chicago Bears. After that trade was complete, the Jags named Minshew their starter. He has yet to disappoint.
In two games this season, Minshew has thrown for 512 yards, 6 TDs, and 2 INTs. Those 2 INTs came in Sunday’s loss to the Tennessee Titans. However, in week one Minshew was unbelievable. He completed 95% of his passes going 19 of 20. While his yardage output was low (173 yards), he did have 3 TDs and 0 INTs. Minshew has shown up for the Jacksonville Jaguars through two weeks and it has been a pleasant surprise.
Gardner Minshew and the Jacksonville Jaguars have another friendly matchup on Thursday night against the Miami Dolphins. The more success that he has, the more confidence he is going to build. I believe, as do the Jaguars, that there is something about the kid that could lead to some big things. I am not necessarily talking about the big game; however, he could just lead the Jaguars to a playoff appearance. Maybe not this season, but surely in the future.
The Jacksonville Jaguars may not be “Tanking for Trevor”! They look to have a player in Gardner Minshew II that is certainly capable of being “The Guy”. Their upcoming schedule is favorable with games against the Dolphins, Cincinnati Bengals, and Houston Texans. The more confidence he builds, the better he and the Jags will be.
