USF Bulls: Looking Forward to Notre Dame Fighting Irish
The USF Bulls started off their 2020 season win a 27-6 win over The Citadel Bulldogs. It was USF home opener under a rainy night and with no fans in the stands. Last year the Bulls struggled on defense allowing 34 points to five opponents and in those games also gave 435 yards in half of those games. This past week they held the Bulldogs to six points and 284 yards of total offense. It was a strong step for the Bulls and first-year head coach Jeff Scott. They will take that and head to Indiana to play the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. The last time they lay the Irish was in 2011. That day there was a big upset as the Bulls beat the Irish 23-20. The game was delayed many times due to thunderstorms. The Irish were ranked 16that the time.
Notre Dame Fighting Irish
The Fighting Irish had to become a member of the ACC in 2020. This was so they could play football. Their schedule started off with the Duke Blue Devils. The Blue Devils are an ACC opponent. The game was back and forth until the end where the Notre Dame was able to win 27-13. The Blue Devils took an early 3-0 lead and what never led again. For what the stats say and from individuals that watch the game it was closer than many thought. Duke had 332 yards of total offense on a good Irish defense. Of those 332 yards, 259 came from the pass. If the USF Bulls can get the passing game going Norte Dame will be on their heels. On the flip side if the Irish can get their sacks the Bulls will be trouble. The offensive line allowed some quarterback rushes against the Citadel.
Not too many people have the Bulls winning many games this year. Jeff Scott came out and made a statement in their first game. The Bulls came out and showed their youth but in the end, it came out to shine. After the Citadel took an early 3-0 lead USF tightened up. They held the Bulldogs to just six points and after the 3-0 start never let relinquished the lead. The Bulls played a no-huddle offense most of the game. They shuffled quarterbacks as Scott was trying to find the right combination. The run game was led by Kelley Joiner and Johnny Ford. Joiner had eight carries for 87 yards and Ford had nine carries 71 yards. Jordan McCloud was the leading passer he went 11/16 for 68 yards and one touchdown. They will need the same kind of balance against the Norte Dame.
I believe this game will come down to who defense plays better. If K.J. Sails and company can play as they did against the Citadel it will be tough for Notre Dame. If Notre Dame can get their pass defense together it will be a long game for USF. I like both offenses in this game. I think that it will be closer than many think and there might be another upset brewing. The Irish should not look past the Bulls because they Wake Forest the following week. This a game that Jeff Scott will have his team ready to play which to me gives the Bulls a chance. The game will kick off at 2:30 PM EST. It will be at Norte Dame Stadium. One of the premier college football stadiums in the country. The Bulls have won here before so I think they can do it again.
