Golf: A Preview of the 2020 US Open

Golf is on the verge of starting the second major of the year. In 2020 due to the coronavirus, we will only have three majors. The Open Championship or British Championship will not happen. This week we will have the U.S. Open which normally is the third major of the year. Before the schedule change, it was the major after the Masters. This week’s tournament will be taking place at Winged Foot Golf Club in Mamaroneck, NY. This will be the 120th version of the US Open. Back when this was still scheduled there was a chance that we would see patrons on the golf course. That will not happen now since at one time the state of New York was the epicenter of the US for Covid-19. Golf seems to not have a problem at the time with not having fans.

Winged Foot was found in 1921 by a large group of the New York Athletic Club. It first opens in June of 1923. There are two courses at Winged Foot. The west course has hosted the US Open five times and a PGA Championship once. The east course has hosted the US Women’s Open twice and US Senior Open. As you can see this golf course has been around for a long time. This golf course is tough and they said they are not trying to humiliate the players. Jack Nicklaus quoted “Winged Foot greens are the most difficult he has ever seen”. Colin Montgomerie who was the runner up at the 2006 US Open. He said, “These greens are quicker than at Augusta National going to downhill, everyone will three-putts this week”. This will be a tournament where you might see the winner over par for the tournament.

The field is full of star-studded players. They come from all over the world. The one question that this sportswriter has is will Phil Mickelson finally win a US Open this week? Mickelson has come close so many times. This course will be tough for Mickelson because he has issues keeping the ball in the fairway off the tee. We will not see Brooks Koepka this week he suffered a tear to his patellar tendon in his left knee. There is still Dustin Johnson who won the Fed Ex Cup, Rory McIlroy, Tiger Woods, Bryson DeChambeau, Rickie Fowler, Xander Schauffele, Jason Day, and many more. This field will be tested. If you ask any golfer whether professional or amateur this is one of the toughest tournaments and courses set up a player will see.

I could see this being a struggle. The rough is thick and will be hard for the players to hit out of. When a golf club cannot make solid contact with the ball strange things can occur. I also believe that will we see the winner be in what in the golf world we call the black. In lemans terms that means over par. It would be great to see Tiger Woods or Phil Mickelson win this week. I do not see that happening instead it will probably be one of the young guns on tour. We might also see a first-time winner like Colin Morikawa who won the PGA Championship last month. This will have to hold us over until November when the Masters occurs. I will be watching as I watch all of the majors and this one will be great.
