New England Patriots: 3 Studs Versus the Miami Dolphins

This was the first time in 20 years that we did not see Tom Brady as the New England Patriots quarterback. Many have counted the Patriots out saying they will miss the playoffs. Their 2020 season would start at home against their division rival the Miami Dolphins. The same Dolphins that beat the Patriots in week 17 last year. That cost New England a chance at the top seeds in the AFC playoffs. The Patriots would host the Tennessee Titans and the Titans would dominate them and it would be the end of the Tom Brady era. Today started the Cam Newton era for the Patriots. Newton brings a different dynamic that Brady was unable to. That is the way to be more mobile and use his legs to extend drives. He and the team showed that today against the Dolphins.

    Cam Newton

With huge shoes to fill after the GOAT left to join the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He was also coming off of shoulder surgery. His first game as a patriot was a good one. Newton was 15 for 19 for 155 yards and no touchdowns. He had 15 carries for 75 yards and two touchdowns. Like I said earlier he used his legs to make a difference. He ran the Patriots offense very well. For what I saw it is going to be a good year for the offense. Newton was one of six players that contribute to the run game for New England.

    Julian Edelman

Edelman was one of the biggest weapons for Tom Brady. They were close on and off the field. When Brady decided to leave Edelman knew it was going to be different. He likes playing against the Miami Dolphins. Today game he did not have a touchdown. On the other hand, he did one carry for 23 yards and five catches for 57 yards. No matter who is playing quarterback he will be one of the primary targets. I will see Edelman being a big target for Newton and the Patriots for the rest of the season.

    Patriots’ Defense

The Patriots’ defense was coming into the season with many changes. Those changes came from free agency and from players deciding to opt-out do to the coronavirus. Patrick Chung and Donte Hightower were two that decided to opt-out. This sportswriter was concerned about this side of the ball. The same defense that times a year ago dominated teams. Well, today against the Miami Dolphins they did very well. Holding the Dolphins to just a total of 269 yards of total offense. New England’s defense also caused three interceptions. To me, this was a good start to mainly a new group of players on the Patriots defense.

Overall I think this was a good start for the New England Patriots as a team. To beat a division opponent in the Miami Dolphins. Cam Newton looked like his old self. He showed that the Patriots offense has added more of a dynamic by using his legs to extend drives. With Julian Edelman as a weapon in the offense look for Newton and him to connect many times. The defense was also stellar in the win today. The Patriots have a tough schedule and will need the whole team to do what they did today and better moving forward. They will now travel to play the Seattle Seahawks who also won in week one.
