Jake Oettinger the Next Starting Goalie for the Dallas Stars?
The Dallas Stars were outplayed in Game 2 of the Western Conference Finals against the Vegas Golden Knights 3-0. Anton Khudobin didn’t play his best game of the playoffs. He played the first two periods and finished with 24 saves. Jake Oettinger made his NHL debut in the third period and finished with five saves.
Oettinger is only 21 years old and he was drafted in the first-round (26th overall) in the 2017 NHL Draft. Could Jake Oettinger be the next starting goalie for the Dallas Stars for years to come?
The answer is yes, but it isn’t going to be in 2020-2021. It could be in 2021-2022 or maybe 2022-2023.
What Stands Out?
Ben Bishop is 33 years old and he is under contract for three more seasons. Could it be possible that he gets traded to another team once again before his contract expires? The same thing happened with him when they decided to trade him from the Tampa Bay Lightning because they wanted Andrei Vasilevskiy to get the net full time.
This could be the case with Jake Oettinger in a couple of years from now. He can’t afford to be the backup next season unless he plays 40 games and Bishop has an injury history.
He will be owed $4,916,667 million over the next few seasons, according to Spotrac.
As for Anton Khudobin, he is 34 years old and currently the starting goalie for this team in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. He is making $2.5 million for the 2019-2020 season though. What if Khudobin leads them to a Stanley Cup Title for the first time since 1999 though?
He will be an unrestricted free agent once the Stanley Cup Playoffs are over. Khudobin I could see being brought back for a season or two.
Go With Goalies
The Dallas Stars goaltending group is the heart and soul of this hockey team. They are one of the best units in the NHL.
It is why they make it to the playoffs more times than not. Jeff Reese is the goaltending coach of this hockey team and he has been there for four seasons though.
In 38 games this past season in the AHL with the Texas Stars, his record was 15-16-4 with a .917 save percentage and a 2.57 GAA, along with three shutouts.
He played his college hockey for three seasons at Boston University. For developmental reasons, they should have Jake Oettinger playing in the AHL once again next season. He is the third goalie on this team for a reason though.
Oettinger is very athletic and he is very smooth though. This is one of the reasons why the Dallas Stars took him in the first round a few years ago. It is very rare these days for goalies to get drafted in the first round.
Yaroslav Askarov is projected to be a first-round pick at the goaltending position for the 2020 NHL Draft.
Spencer Knight was drafted 13th overall out of Boston College in the 2019 NHL Draft by the Florida Panthers.
Ilya Samsonov was drafted 22nd overall in the 2015 NHL Draft by the Washington Capitals.
Andrei Vasilevskiy was drafted 19th overall in the 2012 NHL Draft by the Tampa Bay Lightning.
You have to be a special talent to be drafted in the first round of the NHL Draft at goaltender and Jake Oettinger is going to be a special goalie for the Dallas Stars one day though.
