The Washington Football Team: 5 Breakout Candidates for 2020
The Washington Football Team is facing many questions for the 2020 season. Will Dwayne Haskins be the starting QB? Can Alex Smith make a push after such a gruesome injury? Is Adrian Peterson still able to carry a big load? How good can this defense be? All of these questions and more surround this team on the field.
There is one other question that I want to explore. That is, who will break out for The Washington Football Team in 2020? There are a few candidates on both sides of the ball. Let us look at five of them.
Bryce Love – RB
Love is entering his second season out of Stanford University. There he ran for a career total of 3,865 yards. His best year was in 2017 when he ran for 2,118 yards. Washington selected Love in the fourth round of the 2019 NFL Draft. He spent that entire season on the injured reserve list with a knee injury.
Love is now the second back on the depth chart. He will see his fair share of carries with the release of Derrius Guice after domestic violence charges. If Love can regain the explosiveness, he showed in 2017 with the Cardinal, he could be a surprise in 2020.
Landon Collins – Safety
Collins was the leader in Washington’s secondary last season. He finished 2019 with over 100 tackles. In 2020, Washington is switching to a 4-3 base defense. Thus far, in training camp, Collins is playing closer to the line of scrimmage. This is more suited for his style of play. Collins is a much better tackler than he is in coverage. Placing him down towards the LOS will allow him to be more aggressive on QBs and RBs. Ultimately allowing him to return to his form from 2016-18.
Da’Ron Payne – DL
Payne is entering his third season with The Washington Football Team. However, his first two seasons have not been what many thought they would be. That all could change in 2020. The talk of the interior D-Line is Matt Ioannidis. In saying that, I believe that will help with the breakout of Payne. The addition of pass-rushing defensive end Chase Young will also be a big boost for the third-year star.
Terry McLaurin – WR
Outside of the development of Haskins, McLaurin has been the talk of the offseason. As a rookie, Scary Terry finished with 919 yards on 58 catches. He also added 7 TDs. Many, including myself, believe that he will easily surpass these numbers in 2020. If he can, look for Washington to be in the think of a surprising 2020 campaign.
Jimmy Moreland – CB
Moreland is entering his second season with The Washington Football Team. The young corner seems to have a knack for the ball. He is making the big play in training camp thus far in 2020. He is currently third on the depth chart, although I could see him making a strong move before the beginning of the season. Especially if he keep making big plays. The corner spot opposite Kendall Fuller is wide open and Jimmy Moreland could make a big impact there for Washington in 2020.
While the defense of The Washington Football Team is expected to be the carrier for the team, look for the offense to improve and do better things as the year progresses. If they are able to run the ball consistently, it will most definitely help in the development of a young Dewayne Haskins. Look for Washington to be competitive. However, if these five players can explode, look for a surprise 2020 campaign in the Nation’s Capital.
