Tampa Bay Lightning: Brayden Point Early Conn Smythe Candidate?

The Tampa Bay Lightning didn’t have an easy first-round match up once again this season against the Columbus Blue Jackets. In Game 5 after trailing 4-2, Brayden Point scored the game-winning back-handed goal just 5:12 into the overtime session as Tampa Bay defeated Columbus 5-4.

The goal was assisted by Nikita Kucherov. Joonas Korpisalo had no chance to stop it after the puck went off a Columbus Blue Jackets defenseman’s skate though.

This was the second time this series that Point scored an overtime goal. He scored the game-winning goal in Game 1 also well. Brayden Point scored that goal with 9:33 remaining in the fifth overtime session.

During this postseason run so far in eight games, he has scored five goals and has recorded five assists. His plus/minus is 1.

Point is one of the reasons why the Tampa Bay Lightning are now ready to move on from their postseason failure of getting swept against the Columbus Blue Jackets last season, as the top team in the NHL by winning The Presidents’ Trophy.

His teammate, Nikita Kucherov has scored two goals and has recorded seven assists, in eight playoff games as well though. His plus/minus is 2.

Kucherov is 27 years old.

Point is 24 years old.

They have been doing it without Steven Stamkos and he is expected to come back in the later rounds, for Jon Cooper’s bunch (Head Coach of the Tampa Bay Lightning).

These are the three players play on the top line and it is the heart and soul of this hockey team. This team is on a mission to win it all this season.

They don’t know who they will face in the second round, but if the respective series holds up, then the Tampa Bay Lightning (number two seed) will face the Boston Bruins (number four seed).

The Islanders had a chance to close out the Capitals in Game 4, but they lost that game 3-2.

The (1) Philadelphia Flyers have a 3-2 series lead against the (8) Montreal Canadiens. Philadelphia had a chance to close out Montreal on Wednesday night, but they lost 5-3.

The Flyers will have a second chance to close out the Canadiens on Friday night in Game 6.

As of right now, if the Tampa Bay Lightning were to go all the way and it is something they have not done since 2004 in seven games against the Calgary Flames, Brayden Point should be the Tampa Bay Lightning’s favorite to win The Conn Smythe Trophy.

We will see how the rest of the postseason is going to play out for this hockey team though. Tampa Bay continues to be a very good hockey though at the moment.

What do you think of Brayden Point being the early Conn Smythe Favorite for the Tampa Bay Lightning? Leave a comment below.
