Hockey: Five Movies to get you Ready for the Restart

The return of live sporting events has been big for the sanity of our country. Believe it or not, sports are a major need for many. Without them, some people go nuts. Especially when it comes to the sport of hockey. The fans of this sport will drive some to drink with their love for the game. It is the same passion that many fans have for other sports.

Given that passion and the NHL opening up on Saturday, August 1, I thought it would be fun to dive into the entertainment side of hockey. In this article, we are going to look at five hockey movies that should get you ready for the return of the hard-hitting action.

Slapshot (1977)

Slapshot is a cult classic from the 70s. It stars Paul Newman as a player-coach for the Charleston Chiefs. From the very first scene to all of the locker-room brash in between, Slapshot surely is a movie that will you get you fired up for the return of hockey.

The Mighty Ducks Franchise (1992, 1994, 1996)

How do you not include a movie franchise that ends up having a hockey franchise named after it? The Mighty Ducks will be an all-time hit with any ice hockey fan.

This a Bad News Bears type of series but only on ice. Emilio Estevez plays a coach who is in charge of a bunch of kids who have never accomplished anything. Of course, he turns them around and into winners. You know the rest of the story.

Mystery, Alaska (1999)

This classic hockey movie stars Russell Crowe as the sheriff in the small Alaskan town of Mystery. He is also the team captain of the local pond hockey team that is preparing to take on the New York Rangers. Yes, the NHL team. Burt Reynolds also coaches mystery. While it was not a box office smash, it is truly one of the better hockey movies to get you ready for Saturday.

The Rocket: The Maurice Richard Story (2005)

This is the biopic representation of Montreal Canadiens sniper Maurice Richard. It is a must-see. This movie is so well done that it will take you back to the 1950s. The era in which Richard played. In addition, the truthfulness and accuracy are very spot on. You see, Richard and his family were present during the production.

Miracle (2004)

Miracle is the story of the 1980 United States Hockey team. It is a David and Goliath story. David, The USA was going up against Goliath (Russia) in the medal round of the 1980 Winter Olympics. Many believed the United States had no business being on the ice with the Russian team. They set out to prove otherwise.

Disney does a fantastic job leaving you on the edge of your seat. Even though most hockey fans know the outcome of the game, there are parts in the movies that leave you guessing. Let us not forget it stars Kurt Russell as Head Coach Herb Brooks as well.

These five hockey movies are a must-watch for not only hockey fans but also sports fans in general. If you are not already pumped for the return of the NHL, these will surely get you there. I hope you enjoy the list.
