Portland Trail Blazers: Damian Lillard Deserves to Be on NBA 2K21

On Tuesday, it was announced Damian Lillard, point guard for the Portland Trail Blazers will be one of the three cover athletes for the video game “NBA 2K21”.

It’s fitting because not only does Dame D.O.L.L.A. play the game at a high level, but he has plenty of highlight-reel plays that are video game worthy.

Before Lillard got to Portland, the Blazers missed the playoffs six times in the prior nine seasons.

After being selected with the No. 6 overall pick in the 2012 NBA Draft, Lillard and the Blazers reached postseason play in six of the following seven seasons (excludes the 2019-20 campaign).

A Star Is Born

Damian Lillard is a four-time All-NBA player and captured the 2012-13 Rookie of the Year Award.

The Weber State product is also a five-time All-Star and before the COVID-19 shutdown was having a career year.

Lillard was averaging 28.9 points per game and 7.8 APG.

It’s not a mistake why the Blazers haven’t missed the playoffs since Dame’s rookie year.

No. 0 has been the driving force for Portland and head coach Terry Stotts.

Mr. Clutch Is In The Building

When NBA fans think of Damian Lillard, they have to think of his ability to nail the big shot.

Before this season, Dame hit 18 clutch shots in his pro career.

The NBA defines crunch-time as the final five minutes of regulation or overtime for a team either ahead or behind five or fewer points.

It’s About Time

NBA 2K has been around since the 1999-2000 season, but none of the cover athletes were a part of the Portland Trail Blazers.

With Rip City making it to six straight playoffs, you would think that Damian Lillard would have got on the cover sooner.

This is a huge deal not just for Lillard, but for Portland since this is the first time a player from their organization has reached that mountain top.

When you think of successful NBA franchises, you imagine the Los Angeles Lakers, San Antonio Spurs, and most recently the Golden State Warriors.

However, the Blazers have a pretty good history of their own.

Portland’s NBA team has made it to the postseason in 35 of its 51 years of existence (could make playoffs this season). However, only one championship has ended up in their grasp.

Top of the Mountain

Honestly, it’s hard to say when Damian Lillard will lead the Blazers to an NBA title.

Especially, if both LA teams are attracting star players for years to come.

But, that shouldn’t take away from the hard work and perseverance Lillard and the Blazers have shown over the years.

Last season, Portland earned its third 53-win campaign in the past 20 years and made it to their first Western Conference Finals since the 2000 postseason.

Chris Paul, Trae Young, and Russell Westbrook are some of the best guards in basketball, but if I’m creating team I’d want Lillard to run my offense.

Lillard isn’t known as a ball hog and he can be the face of the NBA since he is still young enough to do.

Dame D.O.L.L.A. deserves to be on NBA 2K21 and if you want to jam out to any rapper, why not give Dame a try?
