NFL: Cam Newton Shifts Balance of the AFC East

As we know it, the AFC East is not a division with much parody among the teams. The New England Patriots controlled the division for years. However, in the 2020 offseason that seemed to have changed. Gone was long-time Patriots QB Tom Brady. Brady was the catalyst for so many New England championships. This seemed to open the door for other teams in the division. The New England Patriots then said not so fast, we run this bitch. They once again flexed their muscle by signing former Carolina Panthers QB, Cam Newton.

While Newton once again solidifies the quarterback position for the defending AFC East Champions, it also changes the landscape of the division as well. One that was tilting away from the great northeast is now balancing back in their direction. Let us look at why.

Buffalo Bills

This is the team, before the Newton signing, was becoming the fan-favorite to win the division. After all, they gave the Pats a run last season and finally made the playoffs after a lengthy drought.

The Bills have the best makeup to contend in the division. They have a top 10 defense, a young QB, and a growing set of weapons on the outside. Head Coach Sean McDermott will have them prepared every week. If there were any other team in the AFC East that can finally overtake the New England Patriots this would be the one in 2020.

New York Jets

The Jets are still a mess. Not necessarily, dumpster fire level, but a mess nonetheless. Head Coach Adam Gase is in over his head, I believe. His star player, S Jamal Adams has requested a trade.

Meanwhile, the offense is a huge question mark. They lack solid offensive line play. There are also questions on the outside at receiver. They did draft Mekhi Becton to begin to sure up the offensive line. Although, he has some work to do to be at an NFL level. In addition, they grabbed Denzel Mims in the second round of the 2020 draft. He will certainly help on the outside. Nevertheless, I do not see enough out of the New York Jets for them to challenge in the AFC East.

Miami Dolphins

The Dolphins are a team on the rise. Second-year headman, Brian Flores had this team finally believing in itself at the end of the 2019 season. With the selection of Tua Tagovailoa with the fifth pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, the Dolphins sent themselves up for the future. This team has a number one receiver in DaVante Parker as well. With the signing of Jordan Howard to the backfield, the Dolphins now have a formidable running game. Look for this offense to make some noise in, not only the AFC East but also the NFL. It just will not be enough to challenge in the division

New England Patriots

The signing of Cam Newton yesterday may just put them back in the driver’s seat of the AFC East. That veteran leadership goes a long way. We know that the defense will be ready to play. Head Coach Bill Belichick’s defenses are always up to a challenge. The question will be whom Cam is throwing to. Mohamed Sanu is returning from a season-ending ankle injury in 2019. There is also the N’Keal Harry, who the team selected in the first round of the 2019 draft. Of course, there is Julian Edelman too. All these receivers have an injury history so heath and availability will be on the table of success as well.

While the New England Patriots running away with the AFC East is no longer a foregone conclusion, signing Cam Newton puts them back on top. The champs are the champs until someone knocks them off.

How do you feel about the New England Patriots signing Cam Newton? Does it keep the cream at the top of the division? Leave a comment below.
