Buffalo Sabres: Jason Botterill Let Go as General Manager

The Buffalo Sabres franchise continues to be in turmoil. Because of it, they decided to fire General Manager Jason Botterill on Tuesday. He was there for three seasons and Botterill did not exactly do a great job of fixing up the team.

Senior Vice President of Business Administration Kevyn Adams has been named the new General Manager. The Buffalo Sabres decided to hire from within the organization and I am not sure if that was a great move or not.

This franchise has not made it to the playoffs since the 2010-2011 season as the seventh seed in the Eastern Conference. They lost to the Philadelphia Flyers in the playoffs that season in seven games.

Buffalo has also wasted Jack Eichel‘s years so far and maybe he had a voice in this. Eichel is the heart and soul of the Buffalo Sabres. Jack Eichel needs players around him or he will request a trade.

Ryan O’Reilly was one of the key players traded in Botterill’s tenure. He was traded to the St. Louis Blues in the offseason of 2018. O’Reilly won a Stanley Cup with them in 2019 and he also won the 2019 Conn Smythe Trophy (NHL Playoff MVP).

I don’t think Jack Eichel has a bad reputation though. I think it is because of how poorly this organization is run. Eichel gets the same rep as Taylor Hall once did when he was with the Edmonton Oilers and then salvaged himself with a Hart Trophy (NHL MVP) and other things.

Maybe Jason Botterill isn’t a good General Manager after all. He was giving a few drafts. It isn’t like he was canned after one season. Botterill used to be an Assistant General Manager for the Pittsburgh Penguins. Maybe he will go back to that organization and help out General Manager Jim Rutherford. Bill Guerin was the Assistant General Manager there before he took a full-time job with the Minnesota Wild.

I am curious to see where Botterill goes next. Maybe someone else will feel like he got a raw deal in Buffalo or maybe he will go to another team and be an assistant somewhere. I don’t think his front office career is over considering the fact he is only 44 years old. Another move he made in his three-year tenure with Buffalo was trading for winger Jeff Skinner from the Carolina Hurricanes.

Skinner is a good player. He also drafted defenseman Rasmus Dahlin number one overall in the 2018 NHL Draft class.

Centerman Casey Mittelstadt was drafted eight overall in the 2017 NHL Draft. He has massively underachieved or maybe Botterill didn’t evaluate his talent well enough there.

Adams is going to have one tough job trying to fix up this personnel mess in Buffalo. One of the key things for this franchise is that their AHL team, the Rochester Americans, were very good this season.

In 62 games, they had a 33-20-4-5 record with 75 points and a .604 winning percentage. Rochester was six points behind the Belleville Senators (63 games, 38-20-4-1 record with 81 points and a .643 winning percentage).

As for the Buffalo Sabres themselves, they finished in sixth place in the Atlantic Division with a 30-31-8 record with 68 points. They scored 195 goals and gave up 217 goals. They didn’t generate enough offense. Buffalo has a long way to go in order for being a playoff team again.

The Sabres were 32 points behind the Boston Bruins for first place in the Division. Boston’s record was (44-14-12 with 100 points). Buffalo will have a long way to go in order to be relevant again in the standings. They just the 24-team playoff by just three points and it went to the Montreal Canadiens (31-31-9 record with 71 points).
