New York Mets Potential Plans With a DH in Place

Because of the coronavirus, there are going to be some very interesting things going on in the sports world. One of them is that the MLB is most likely going to institute the universal DH. The New York Mets play in the National League.

This is not only going to affect them, but it is going to affect other teams in baseball. New York will no longer need to have pinch hitters in games. Starting pitchers are going shorter and shorter in games.

Since this is the case most likely moving forward, what will the Mets lineup potentially look like if there is a 2020 season?

Jeff McNeil will most likely lead off and play third base. Michael Conforto will be second and play center field. Robinson Cano will be third and play second base. Pete Alonso will be fourth and play first base. Yoenis Cespedes will be fifth and be the DH. J.D. Davis will be sixth and play left field. Brandon Nimmo will be seventh and play right field. Wilson Ramos will be eighth and play catcher. Amed Rosario will be ninth and play shortstop.

Having Cespedes as the DH will be huge. He can’t be in the field due to injury and Yoenis Cespedes gives this team an extra bat in the lineup. He is the heartbeat and the heart and soul of this team, especially when they went to the World Series in 2015. Cespedes can get this team back to the World Series.

Even if Cespedes doesn’t DH in some games, Dominic Smith could play first base and maybe Pete Alonso could DH as well. There could also be some games where outfielder Jake Marisnick is in the field and someone like J.D. Davis or Michael Conforto is in the DH role. This team is deep when it comes to hitting the ball. That is not this team’s problem.

The problem with this team is the defense is eh. The bullpen was also shaky last season and they don’t know how good it will be this season with Dellin Betances, Jeurys Familia, and Edwin Diaz.

Luis Rojas is in his first season as the manager after Mickey Callaway was fired. Carlos Beltran was supposed to be the manager, but he was let go due to the Houston Astros scandal.

Rojas is the brother of Moises Alou. It will be interesting to see what tactics Rojas uses this season as the new manager.

The starting rotation will be Jacob deGrom, Marcus Stroman, Steven Matz, Rick Porcello, and Michael Wacha.

Noah Syndergaard will not pitch this season due to a UCL injury and it required surgery on it. Seth Lugo or Robert Gsellman could be back in the rotation or stay in the bullpen this season.

If the MLB decides to go with seven teams for the playoffs in the American League and the National League, the New York Mets could be very well one of those seven teams because of how good their offense is.

The Washington Nationals, the Atlanta Braves, and the Philadelphia Phillies could also make it to the playoffs and win the National League East. Washington won the World Series last year in seven games on the road against the Houston Astros.

The New York Mets are looking for their first World Series Title since 1986. They defeated the Boston Red Sox in seven games that season. New York lost to the Kansas City Royals in five games in 2015.

Whenever the MLB season begins at the beginning of July sometime potentially, it will be somewhere between 75-85 games. We will see how this could benefit the Mets.
