Today’s NFL is much different. With the ripple effects from the Coronavirus, keeping contracts from finalizing it is also keeping trades from being completed. Thus, it is also keeping trades from happening. Therefore, teams are releasing players instead. One such player is Todd Gurley. The Los Angeles Rams released him yesterday. Several teams want his services. Let us look at three of them.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers
The Bucs are in dire need of a bell cow style running back. Currently, the starter is to be Ronald Jones II. At least he is listed one on the depth chart. It is what is behind him that is bothersome. Players like Peyton Barber can be serviceable. However, the rest of the crew are a bunch of no-names (Dare Ogunbowale, TJ Logan, and Aca’Cedric Ware)
Todd Gurley would add that necessary piece to the offense. Gurley is a 5,000 plus yard career rusher. He also is a 2,000-yard career receiver. That career spans just five years and all with the Los Angeles Rams. With the new addition under center, Gurley would be that added weapon that Tom Brady would like to add to his “and company” tag.
Yes, the Broncos have Phillip Lindsay. Nonetheless, they could use a complementary back. Gurley could be just that. The Broncos made an improvement on their offensive line during free agency with the addition of Graham Glasgow from the Detroit Lions. With Dalton Risner, possibly having to move to center Glasgow is going to be a great addition to the offensive line.
As far as Gurley, he would be the perfect complement to Lindsay. They both have great hands out of the backfield. They both are shifty but powerful. If the Broncos can find some way to fit Gurley in the budget, I would think he would be a fantastic addition behind Drew Lock and next to Phillip Lindsay
The Seahawks have had their troubles behind Russell Wilson. Last season they had to bring Marshawn Lynch out of retirement. Their other compliment of backs Chris Carson, Rashad Penny, and CJ Prosise are all injury prone. Of course, Todd Gurley has had his injuries as well. Nevertheless, he would be a great addition to Wilson.
While Todd Gurley has some injury questions, he is still a valuable offensive addition. Nothing will be able to become final until the NFL lifts the restrictions; however, someone is going to bite on the three-time 1,000-yard rusher. Will it be one of the above teams or someone else? Stay tuned.
