XFL Game Thread: New York Guardians vs Tampa Bay Vipers
Here we go the inaugural season of the XFL is upon us. The Saturday matchups were definitely exciting with the DC Defenders beating the Seattle Dragons 31-19 and the Houston Roughnecks laying waste to the Los Angeles 37-17. Today’s matchups look to be just as exciting with the New York Guardians hosting the Tampa Bay Vipers at Met Life Stadium in the Meadowlands, NJ at 2 PM. The weekend will close out with the St Louis Battlehawks visiting the Dallas Renegades at 5 PM Eastern.
The XFL has done a lot to change the landscape of the game by introducing 5 Timing changes including a 25-second play clock, a comeback period, a running game clock, reducing the number of time outs to 2 per half, and a new set of replay rules. They have also introduced Five Common Sense Rules as follows: one foot inbounds, dedicated ball spotting official, coach-to-player communication, simplified illegal man downfield and a 10-minute halftime. Along with the above changes, the XFL has also introduced Five Gameplay Innovations such as and improved KIck off experience to help reduce injuries, and innovative 1, 2, or 3 point-after touchdowns replacing the traditional field goal from the NFL, modified rules on the Punt. They have also introduced a double-forward pass where a team completes a forward pass behind the line of scrimmage, that team may throw a second forward pass, as long as the ball has at no time crossed the line of scrimmage. The final innovation is Overtime where the traditional additional time is replaced with a shoot out of sorts where each team with getting 5 opportunities to score from the 5-yard line, with the most points being scored determining the winner.
The XFL has a nice share of players some former AAF or NFL players and some upstarts looking to make a name for themselves. The Guardians will be led by former Oakland Raider and Nittany Lion standout Matt McGloin. For the Vipers its Aaron Murray formerly of the KC Chiefs and Atlanta Legends of the AAF.
