DC Defenders: Three Stars in the Victory Over the Seattle Dragons

The XFL kicked off with the inaugural game of the 2020 season in Washington DC. The game featured the DC Defenders hosting the Seattle Dragons. In front of 18,000 fans, there was plenty to like about the new league. In addition, for the DC Defenders, there was plenty to like on the day. This team is set to make a splash in its first season. Who stood out against the Dragons? Here are three stars in for the Defenders on the day.

Elijah Campbell – CB

Campbell had a solid game on both defense and special teams. He was involved in many pass defenses and almost secured the win for the Defenders with an interception. Unfortunately, the ball slipped through his hands. However, Campbell did have a big play on special teams. With the Dragons up 6-3 midway through the second quarter, the Defenders defense held the offense to a three and out. The Dragons lined up to put and that is when Elijah Campbell stepped up. He found an opening in the line and had a free shot to the punter. Campbell got his hands on the ball and it rolled into the end zone where teammate Jonathan Celestin recovered for the first TD in DC Defenders history.

Bradley Sylve – CB

We really could have chosen the Defenders’ defense as a whole. Nonetheless, we will go with Sylve individually. Sylve had every CBs dream play, a pick-six! Dragons’ QB Brandon Silvers was trying to hit WR Austin Proehl on an out route. Proehl fell down on the route and there waiting was DC Defender CB Bradley Sylve. Once Sylve secured the ball there was nothing but green grass in front of him. He took the ball back 70 yards for the final score of the game.

Cardale Jones – QB

Jones was the leader for the DC Defenders on the offensive side of the ball. As the face of this franchise, Jones spoke to the crowd before the game saying, “This is for the love of football. Enjoy!” Jones did just that. He enjoyed his day. Cardale Jones was 16 for 26 passing with 291 yards 2 TDS and 0 INTS. He led the offense not only through the air but also with the command of his offense. If Jones can continue this high level of play, the DC Defenders have a solid chance at being one of the best teams in the XFL this season.

The level of play was better than expected for the first week of the XFL in 2020. I am indeed intrigued by both the league and the DC Defenders. This team, for sure, has the make-up of a winner. Let us see what the next 9 weeks bring us.
